Step 1. Drive down to a garage.
Step 2. Tell them you'll pay them 10 dollars to break the axle nut loose.
Step 3. Retighten enough to drive home.
Step 4. Remove the nut once you're home.

Drive to the hardware store and get a Bernz-o-matic propane torch. Heat the nut, then hit it with an impact gun (air actuated, electric ***** **** will not do the job). Borrow one if you've got to, but that's about your best bet.

That's what finally worked for me, the torch made all the difference.

I just had that yesterday where the thing you push to lock into the axle. I couldn't get it pryed out with a screwdriver and had to take my air grinder to weaken the steel so I could get it off with impact. Axle nut is like 2.00 at NAPA and I didn't scuff anything else with grinder.

That is what I did. took about 15 minutes.

Helps to have an air compressor at the house.

HEAT HEAT HEAT and then the impact gun you might have to tourch the nut off or use a nut cutter

pb-blaster + heat + ***** **** cordless electric impact usually works for me, if not then air impact or breaker bar...

There's really not that many tricks to getting axle nuts off.
edit:
other than righty-tighty, lefty-loosey (you'd be suprised, "no **** it won't come off, now lets try loosening it")
