Default Pilot bearing gone bad, why?

Simple question:

What would cause my brand new pilot bearing to go bad? I have the tranny apart for a JDM final drive install along with all new bearings for the countershaft (already replaced the mainshaft bearings a couple months ago), and I decided to check my pilot bearing due to a rattling/clunking sound when the clutch is engaged. I will have all brand new bearings now and all tolerances check out, but I think my culprit might have been this pilot bearing all along. Why would it go bad so quick?

I have an ACT prolite and HDSS clutch/pp if that helps.

I would like to not repeat this problem if there is indeed a problem. Could it just be an unfortunate bad bearing?

Do all dealerships normally carry these in stock? I have an extra ITR flywheel lying around with a good bearing and I was thinking of pressing that out and into the new flywheel so I don't have to push this back an extra day by waiting til Monday.

OOOHHHH....just a thought. I installed the bearing using the good old 2x4 over the bearing and tapping it in. This time I will use a press.

Thanks for any ideas

luck of the draw i would guess with the act kit pilot bearing.

but i would get a new oe pilot bearing so you know it wont happen again by using the old one since you have the trans off anyway. whats another few days if its not your main ride.

I think your installation method is what did this poor bearing in. I use a socket that is exactly the size of the bearing race, that way the bearing doesn't get distorted.

I was told the exact same thing over the weekend. That has to be the reason. This time around I used a socket of exact dimensions to push it in.
