Default 5th gear grind; Synchromesh?

Hey everyone, I've got a somewhat nasty grind going into 5th in my 91 RS. Every other gear, including the common 2nd-3rd gear grind, is perfect. But if I shift into 5th at any RPM's above idle, it will grind and even shifting into 5th at idle I can feel a slight resistance. I've heard wonders about GM Synchromesh so I think I'll change out my tranny fluid with it. Does Pennzoil carry a Friction Modified version of the GM Friction Modified MTF? Is it even that important that I get the "Friction Modified" MTF? Thanks guys

Check your tranny fluid level first, you might be low. But since you're there, might as well throw in GM Synchromesh FM. I had this and it was great.

I just noticed a grind from 2nd to 3rd today. It's not too bad of a grind, but i don't want it getting any worse. I'm gonna have my fluid drained and refilled with Synchromesh.

IMO- i have snychromesh in my car and its awsome. it has a break in process 2-3 weeks but your gears will go in smooth like butter. it also stops your grinds.

Its only going to get worse. Eventually it will grind going in to any gear after 2nd.

Well I'm not even sure when the tranny fluid was last changed, if ever, so it's possible that just due to either old or low tranny fluid 5th gear is grinding. Is there any downside to using Synchromesh as opposed to Honda or any other MTF? Will it wear out the synchro's faster?

No, but if it grinds its because the synchro is going, no matter how much fluid you have or what type you use. The synchromesh might get rid of it, but its only a temporary solution. It will get to the point mentioned above even with the synchromesh, it will just take longer.

Since you do not know when it was last changed, perhaps it just needs to be changed, not replaced with anything "special".
