do you turn the key to "on" and wait for the check engine light to go off before starting it?

Pretty much sounds like your ignition switch. That is why it sometimes starts if you play with the ignition switch at the key. When you start it, it might catch for a fraction of a second, then die completely. At that time, the instrument panel also goes out, you might not have noticed before. If that is your symptom, try this test, turn your key to start the engine, but hold the key slightly back (less forward rotation) the moment after the starter motor turns the engine over. If it keeps running then it is your ignition switch. Sometimes the switch can be repaired by a DIY job.

well, i have read about the dash lights going out part, but mine has never done it. I do remember once i turned the key the III position (without actually turning the key and holding it) and it just fired up!. i found that odd. but anyway i hope that's the problem cause i'm getting ready to buy the part. if it's not i'll be pissed.
thammks for the input.
