ivtec or vtec
http://asia.vtec.net/article/k20a/
Basically, i-vtec would be more desirable, it adds another vtec point at lower rpm so if you really need to get moving you don't have to wait to get to 5600 for example, it'll kick in at 4800 instead at WOT.

Yup.
Adjusting the cam angle for every rev range, throttle input, and engine load through ECU programming is quite an improvement over using manually-adjustable cam gears.

Unless you reprogram it for another rev range.
To confuse you more, the K20A3 engine (base RSX and 02-05 Civic Si) "engages vtec" at about 2200 rpm. They run as a 12-valve motor below 2200, and open up the second exhaust valve above 2200.
Further...
Throughout the rev range, the cam overlap is constantly adjusted by the ECU, as I said before.
i-VTEC > old VTEC

On the K20 engines there is no pop like you are thinking about, that went out the door with the B series. On top of that the K20A3 in the ep3 and the K20A2 in the DC5 are very different engines.

got ep3 civic type-r with dohc i-vtec (K20A2) and it has more power on lower rpm's than the DC2's and other vtec engines.
as ppl said before me, u got more power from the start, dont need to rev it like mad always.
although the limit is at arround 8300 and the vtec which jams u in the seats kicks in arround 6000
