I think your talking about a "torque converter", well anyways , a torque converter is the middle man of the engine and auto tranny, sort of works like a clutch except the driver dosent control when to enguge it to make the wheels spin, for example, your at a stop light and your car idles at let say 750, and your stall speed is 1500 rpm, as you give it gas the wheels start to turn, the converter does this by slipping, as you get to your stall speed point the torque converter stops slipping very noticably, then your car goes. Oh yea just tell your friend to look for a 5spd. teg instead of converting it, unless he's getting it for free, go ahead and do the conversion or just sell it and buy a 5spd teg.

A torque converter does what he described. Stall converter (I am not sure of this) I think is the name of a high performance torque converter. You can buy them set to different stall speeds. So if you are driving normally your stall converter is set to go to a normal speed, and then if you floor it from a stop you can make it to where the car will automatically rev to a high RPM and then engage, much like dropping the clutch on a manual car. They cause your car to run at a little bit higher RPMs all the time (from what I am told) therefor using a little more gas, and if you are driving it really hard it will rev through all the gears to a designated RPM before shifting.

Just type it in on google and you can get more info. I know of a lot of people doing this to their automatic cars (i.e. blazers with 383 strokers and monte carlos and stuff), they might be a little more popular with muscle cars but I think they might be getting more popular.

I am not an expert on these, this is all stuff I gathered from asking around, reading, and whatnot. Hope that helps.
