whenever you take off the oil filter.

right there is the oil cooler, basically the oil filter sits right ontop of the oil cooler

It is not a very effective one, but they are in there.

i guess if you are running turbo / fi it might not be

but for everyone else, it works just fine.

the stock one does not work too good on a hot day 85f+ and your on a race track for 20min+ going all out. You will get oil temps up to 260f, even though water temp stays at 220f. Other than that it works great, you will never get it that hot driving around town no matter how hard you try, so unless your tracking the car or have turbo then the OEM cooler is good enough.

is it possible to remove the factory oil cooler in place of a sandwich adapter and then run inward and outward bound lines to a setrab or similar oil cooler?

yes you can get a sandwich adapter, but there is no need to remove the factory cooler. you can just replace the oil filter with the sandwich plate and run an external oil cooler with the OEM internal oil cooler still there. you then relocate the oil filter, and you can even run a bigger filter if you mount the filter holder in a place that has more room than the stock location.

This is the kit I'm installing before next race:

Great deal and it comes with every thing you need.

ok thanks. now i have a couple more questions:

wouldn't a bigger oil filter lower our oil pressure?

could you use an aftermarket oil cooler and run new lines to the factory piece before the oil filter? or would you still need a sandwich adapter and a kit similar to the one in the link above?

No, they typically have less drop in oil pressure across the filter. Same filter media as the smaller size, just more surface area for the oil to pass though.

The factory cooler is connected directly to the engine block so there isn't any oil lines running to it, it just lines up with oil ports on the block, and the other side is were the filter screws into. Our cars don't have any external oil lines at all, unless you add them.

thanks 577, but let me explain what i meant in my last post. look at the pic in the link below and find part 17. it has 2 solid lines connecting to it that i think go to the oil cooler. i want to connect 2 stainless teel braided lines to those, and run an aftermarket external oil cooler mounted in the front bumper. would that idea work? is part #17 even the factory oil cooler fluid sender?

I don't see a link in your post, but if you're talking about the two lines that go from the oil cooler to the engine, they're coolant lines, not oil lines. The stock oil cooler is an oil-to-water oil cooler. The oil flows from the block into the cooler and then into the filter. There are no oil lines in the cooler.

I removed the oil cooler on my H22 and used a thermostatic Mocal sandwich plate with a huge Mocal cooler. I don't see a reason to keep it, and I wanted to eliminate any unnecessary fluid lines in the engine.

i read your post, and i think you are right. it looks like coolany goes into part #17. i though oil went from #17 to some kind of factory air-to-air cooler. thanks for the help. looks like to will do the sandwich adapter thing
