Default Tach breaking up issues...

A couple days before we tuned my car, It started missing due to the infamous ignitor crap. So I swapped in my spare ignitor and the car runs perfectly, but the tach won't go past 3K. It will move smoothly up to 3K and then it seems like it hits a rev limiter, bounces a couple times and then just dies.

Whats weird though, is that I noticed that neptune was datalogging the correct RPMs. So I don't know if the problem is with the ignitor itself, or the tach somehow. I'm just not really sure how I should go about fixing this problem.

i got an extra tach i'll trade you for one of those sweet topmounts
check your wires and ground. and swap out the ignitor with a buddies good working one just to rule it out, but i don't think its the ignitor.

it sounds a like you have a different problem then me but i had a "rev limiter" feeling at 3.5k checked for codes got a code 4 crank angle. its in the dist. replaced it and it went away. my rpm cluster used to kinda jump around a bit now its smooth again. just a thought

I have this same problem.

My car always breaks up on the dyno right when it happens also, but after that, everything is perfect.

On the dyno graph, it leaves it blank, like the car slips off the dyno, but the datalogger shows the RPMS perfect.

OBD2 car here. So check the crank position sensor on the oil pump?

im not sure how obd1/2 is ....but when it stops revving at 3000revs that means its in limp mode...could be the timing,,or inside distibutor,......I dont know what else it could be..

You're not understanding...

The car drives fine. The only thing wrong is the tach goes crazy, looks like it's hitting a rev limiter and then sits at 0 RPMs while the rest of the car is functioning as it should.

Breaks up like its missing? My car runs perfectly, so I don't know how it would be the crank angle sensor.

Hrmm.

Yeah, I'm sure its the ignitor, but I'd rather not have to get another one. I have my MSD tach output, but I'm not exactly sure how I should try wiring it up. I just need to spend some time looking at my helms.
