Default Type R "Chips"

Hey dudes,

I'm wondering if you can clarify whether or not there are aftermarket chips for our car that will boost HP?
You always hear of domestic cars or German cars that are "chipped" but I never hear anything about our ITR?
If there is such a thing, can anybody point me in the right direction?
How much HP can be gained by one of these, again, if they exist.

Much appreciated.

yeah you can have your ECU reworked by companies such as comptech or you can tune yourself with V-AFC

Most German cars that are being chipped have factory turbochargers and the chips increase the boost levels as well as play with fuel and timing, but the big gains come from increasing the boost levels. On a honda, stick to a V-AFC until you can afford a true standalone.

Hey!

I think I forgot to mension that I have a hondata stage 4b.
I guess I'm interested to know if there are any chips out there that produce good HP gains without increasing boost...since I'm NA!!!!

This statement does not go with this statement:

You either:

a) are BS-ing about owning a Hondata.

or

b) bought a Hondata without any knowledge of how it works.

EDIT: I just remembered the "b" in "Hondata Stage 4b" stands for "boost" and now this makes even less sense.

Oh I know exactly what my Hondata can do.
I have not installed it yet as I am waiting to get my OBDII to I harness.
Maybe I should have worded it better.
The Hondata will only help me gain between 4-8hp when NA from what I've been told. When I was talking about "chipped" cars, for the most part those cars gain upwards of 30+hp. I understand that some of them have turbos or superchargers stock, I just wanted to know if there was anything out there that could do the same for me NA! I've seen mustangs and even BMW's gaing big HP from chips.
Sorry for all the confusion...this is no BS I assure you.

And yes the "b" stands for boost, but that doesn't mean you can't install the thing before you get a turbo or supercharger. There are still benefits from having the hondata installed before the future boost applications arrive!

Gains from a Hondata depend 100% on the tuning. There is no guarantee of gains from the unit.

If you're planning on boost in the future, don't say:

I'm NA!!!!
In short, don't worry about chipping your ECU. Only worry about chipping your ECU when you install cams other than the stock ITR units.

No chips give anywhere near 30hp unless the car came boosted from the factory. All they really do is up the boost and play with the timing a little.

You can accomplish the same thing with a manual boost controller, which is why I don't see why people go the chip route at all.

I'd be real suprised to see a chip do anything for a NA car, even 1hp.

I think you don't really understand what "chips" means.
It is not a magical thing that you put in your car, you car gain 30+ hp instantly.
"Chips" means you are change the ECU settings (includes air/fuel ratio, vtec crossover etc etc). Since you have hondata, you should be able to change those settings to optimal with the help of a dyno. Since our car is NA, there is no point to "chip" it if your car don't have any major mod. How many hp gain depends on the setup of your car and tunning. (usually won't be more than 30hp for NA)
European cars are different. Take VW 1.8T for example, they have factory turbo. The factory won't raise the boost level to the max due to various reasons (emission, reliability etc). By "chipping", you increase the boost level. Since it is much more easy to get hp by boosting up the boost level for a turbo car, you can see 30hp+ gain easily.

Actually, I had a superchip for my Mountaineer before I put the supercharger on it. Gains, as listed on superchips site, are 21HP and 32ft lbs/torque... It was quite a noticeable difference... I never bothered taking it to a dyno cuz frankly its just my SUV beater and too far to find an AWD dyno... but, overall performance was quite increased. So yes, they do make them for NA cars.. and yes, the provide more the 1HP.
