what chemical to use to clean valve cover?
I take a toothbrush and put some vinyl cleaner on it and scrub away, takes that oily crap right off and gets into the smaller crevices.
You can simple green the whole motor, safely!
works really good ! after i did mine i was like
especially that my motor is j-spec .you know how dirty those valve cover could get

does J-Spec attract more dirt?
I use citrus degreaser to maintain mine. You can get it in a can or spray at any bike dealer. The best part is that it is strong enough to degrease wax lubricants, but mild enough to use on almost any fragile plastic (especially when dilluted), except for CD jewel boxes. Worked great on my valve cover.

any mild degreaser will work fine. i have used simple green, oil eater, and oil degreaser and they all worked fine. but i have heard that simple green causes rust?? im not sure about this. i dont see how it would, but has anyone heard this or has it happened to you?? i have not been using the stuff very long...but it has done the job everytime i have used it and i have not had any problems with rust.
Yes, rinse too!
And you might also try some sort of silicone spray for tires or interiors (i.e. Tire Wet). You can douce (sp?) the engine bay with the stuff or apply it liberally to the valve cover with a cloth. In either event, it will do wonders to bring back the life to the color. This should be done after you clean it, though!!!

beg to diffe...simple green will strip the paint right off....be careful!!!
Maybe I didn't do it correctly.
SEE: with 20k miles...

but I cover my valve cover with plactic when I was the engine bay.

-who has a clean engine bay
I use Honda Brake Cleaner.
The key is to PAT it dry with a shop rag. Don't rub it. If you rub it, you'll get a weird finish.
Just lightly spray it and pat it dry, and it'll pick up all the dirt easy.

I use GUNK engine degreaser. I picked it up at my local auto store. It works really good, but leaves and awful smell throughout the car. I'll have to try Simple Green.
Fawk cleaning it... get out there and drive. Mine has not been cleaned since the day i bought it. It looks like a GSR valve cover now cause it so damn dirty
