also anyone using the fan switch to activate the fan sooner?

really no need for one unless your R is on the track alot, fan switch isn't a bad idea but really not needed as well unless you have overheating problems? what's your reason for this thread?
been drivin the past few days in chicago and it has been very warm...the temp has been rising...at stop lights and on the hyway...only on the warm days...
no probs on cools days...

lol dude, i just left Chicago... are you kidding me with this heat ****? it's 107 in Las Vegas right now and stock holds up just fine. i daily drove my R for a long time with a built motor in it with the stock thermostat IN LAS VEGAS. heat and Chicago don't even belong in the same sentance...
leave it be, buy a nice new Mugen Steering Wheel from Clayton@Kingmotorsports instead

oh... TURBO. well, fuggin' put a litle more explination into your posts and why you're asking what you're asking and doing what you're doing... a Spoon or Mugen Thermostat would be ideal along with a fan switch, maybe a new Koyo Radiator as well... can't get much "cooler" then that
jackson racing 160 Deg, Because my stock broke and I got it for free!
Thanks to who sent it to me, I forgot who you are.
Works the same, except cools better on long drives.

170 I believe (maybe its 172...)
Datalogging on my laptop showed 168deg F during my last track day, never went colder nor warmer once I was at temp. Stock cooling system on my 12.3:1 2.0L.
thank you

I've had 2 seperate people tell me that the Spoon thermostat keeps the motor too cool. At least on a stock or lightly modded ITR. Said V-tec won't engage since it is too cool. Anyone else heard or experienced this?
I use stock and have no intentions on changing, just thought I'd put that there for the original poster.

there is no point in changing the thermo unless the car is tracked a lot. if its overheating from something like a turbo or using half sized radiator, its going to overheat regardless of how soon the thermo opens. it just might take a bit longer to overheat.
in the situation where a thermo keeps the car TOO COOL basically just means it doesnt allow the car to warm up completely. if its not warmed up completely, the ECU still thinks its in warm up mode and VTEC will not activate.

This is true if you have other compenents such as a fan switch and an aluminum radiator. Just the Spoon Tstat will not create the situation you described.

Yes it is true. I have a fully built 2L 11.5:1 comp. mota, full metal dual core radiator and used to run SPOON thermo. and it ran way too cool. Not good!!! Ever since I've changed over to stock, its been nothing

It's my firm belief that if you run a lower temp thermostat, you should have the ability to run open loop.
That way everything is run off preset values and you don't get strange things like lower mpg, vtec not engaging etc.
I had a nice backfire which I believe was caused by my lower temp thermostat and full row Fluidyne at the track recently. Oil temp was nice and hot due to lapping sessions, but water temp came back down and I set the fan on "4" and had the heat all the way to hot to keep water temps in check (I have no aftermarket gauges).
Upon every upshift/downshift, the car will produce an audible "pLOck." .....And this only went away after - surprisingly 3 laps which is quite a long time when the car is consistently in VTEC.
I still don't believe there is any benefit in running a lower temp thermostat on a STREET car....and I question whether there is any real benefit either on a track car? I'm up in the air about this completely.
