Default how can I tell if a b18b has vtec?

So I'm probably going to get flamed for asking this, but, I tried searching quite a bit and couldn't find anything. I'm going to look at a 96 integra and I know it has a b18b in it, but I'm not sure if it is vtec or not. The owner wants $3500 for it and it is only in fair condition with some dents and chips, and it has 170k on it. I think that's a pretty bad deal for a non vtec integra but I'm having trouble finding anything better, what do you guys think?

It will most likely say Vtec on the valve cover. The only Tegs that come standard with Vtec are the GSR and Type-R....

SO if the block reads B18b1=no vtec
B18c1=vtec
b18c5=vtec

^_^

Ask for $3000 or less. How does it drive? You can try Autotrader.com or cars.com to find better deals.

If you get a teg, I suggest that you do some research before posting because you're going to get flamed for it.

BTW: Thank God you spelled "vtec" right

Wendys is correct. A Vtec engine will have a valve cover that says Vtec. A non Vtec valve cover wont fit a Vtec engine, and vice versa (so it would be hard for the owner just to slap a Vtec valve cover on to fool you)

Also, waive something like $2700 in $20's in his face, he will most likely take the offer.

Wow. $3500 for a 96 with 170k miles on it? Sounds a bit steep to me. I bought a 92 GSR with 240k miles on it for $2500, and that's with many extras. I'd try to talk him down a bit. But good luck with it.

Thats a lot of miles... it will probably last a good 225,000 miles but if your planning on modifying it at all it might not take the abuse. I would suggest just saving for an integra with lower miles. Will last longer. Plus body work is expensive.

find an unmodified, low miles, with 1 or 2 original owners, and you got yourself a nice integra.

Yup, I bought my 94 Teg with 198k miles on it, everything is perfect on the car (literaly, the ac blows soooo good) and I only paid 2000 for it.

Tell the guy that you have 2,700-2,900 cash in hand right now. That it will take you months to come up with what he is asking for.

thanks for all the help guys
i have defintily been doing my research before buying the car, but for some reason i was having a hard time coming up with a definitve answer on that question, i had some friends who said that b18bs never had vtec, and some that said they only came with vtec, so i didn't know who to believe. I was planning on offering this guy $3000 cash if the car drove perfectly and didn't look too bad, but i might just hold on to my cash and wait for something better to come along.

I'm so suprised that i got all helpful replys to this post though, i've been in the VW tuning scene for the past 3 years, and been a member of vwvortex (the most popular of the vw/audi forums) for the past 2, and they just seem to hate on everyone with under 100 posts haha. I've owned 5 vws and 1 audi over the past 3 years but i think its finally time to move on to bigger and better things, and im definitly excited to get in to the honda scene

Haha. I just sold my '00 jetta myself and picked up a '97 teg to play with.

GL on your search. Keep in mind that there are ALOT of abused cars out there and you should keep looking until you find one that you are comfortable with and feel good about.

b18b can have vtec with some modification but generally none will come with vtec stock.

If theres a stock airbox on the engine, then pull the lid of it and take the car for a drive, if it has a vtec head then you will clearly hear the vtec x-over with the lid of the box, if theres no change in engine note then its a stock B18b with NO vtec.

thanks for all the replys guys. I was pretty sure it wasnt vtec, the car is 100% stock, but i just had heard some conflicting information on whether or not b18b's came stock with vtec or not. i'll be taking it for a test drive this week, i'll post up how it goes. Coils are definitly the first step if i get it though, integras sit sky high stock! I was looking at the omnipower coils, even though in searching i found that most of you guys swear by koni yellows and GC coil sleeves.. but i just cant bring myself to trust anything sold primarily on ebay haha, and i want to be sure i can put the thing on the ground
