5th Gear Grinding
Check this out....I had an issue with 2nd and 3rd gear slightly grinding. (I've got a 2001 ITR) Took it back to honda and changed tranny oil. A little while went by this time 2nd still grinding. Drove the car easy for a little while and problem sorted itself out. Then after 6 months or so, At high revs from 4th to 5th it grinds. Now, at my last service I changed my oil to Castrol Syntrax 75w90 full synthetic oil. Could the perculiar grinding in 5th be a lack of oil put into the gearbox? Do I need to drop in some more or is it a bad synchro. I've run out of ideas.
Spoke to Honda about and they said that they will need to drop the tranny and have a look. Then they went on and said that "if we find that the malfunction is because of your negligence then the total cost of dropping the tranny and any repair costs will be worn by you." I have a problem with this especially because I service the car every 5000kms with them and they didn't pick up on the problem after I reported it. Is this a pretty standard response by Honda for me to pick up costs if they "believe" that they were caused by me? Any help would be great.....Thanks for reading....

Damn.. that really sucks, i was about to ask which country you were from, in hopes that you wern't from Australia. Unfortunately i must face the fact that Honda Australia too, sucks big time in that way.
I have the same exact problem. I just changed the tranny fluid. It helped a bit but the grind is still there. Daily driving is fine but if you are in the high rpm ranges then it grinds. I am just going to drive it until I decide to put a new clutch/flywheel/fd in it. I hate taking my car to the dealership even if it is under warranty.
How bout topping up the gear box more, I jacked my ITR on it's side and filled so that there'll be more fluid in there when the car is back on all fours.
The grinding went away for about a week and then is came back, I began to slowly force the gears in at the traffic lights etc and now it seems fine.
I think they are just trying to scare you and spare themselves some spare parts.
It you don't get it looked at then it could get worse, they'll blame you then for sure.

What annoys me the most is that I have reported the problem. They have booked it in and stuff but I've got a funny feeling that they'll blame me....or i'm just being paranoid.....i've been like this all day....they didn't reassure me at all....there wasn't a hint of "it'll be alright....we'll need to pull it out have a look and replace the parts under WARRANTY"....ARRRGGGGHHH.....annoying......thanks for the reply's anywayz.......
PS Should I try to at least go back to Honda MTF and check fluid levels again.....What do you think????

if you take it back into Honda for warranty work you should put the Honda MTL back in there, otherwise they can blame the Castrol fluid on the problem, even though it did it before. Unless you had Honda install that fluid for you. I know one time my old dealer refused to cover tranny noise under warranty because I used 10-30 motor oil, despite the owners manual stating that regular motor oil was acceptable on that vehicle. they will find any way out of warranty claims if they can, even short shifters and the like.
