Default Opinion on alarms

i'm looking to put an alarm system on my 06 Civic LX this week and i'm stuck between two alarms and i'm just looking for everyones opinion on what's the best.

the two i'm looking at are:

A) COMPUSTAR 2WSS-AS CAR ALARM REMOTE START 2-WAY
($701 tax in - installed)**

-or-

VIPER REMOTE START/ALARM 2WAY 785XV
($688 tax in - installed)**

my local dealer wants $220 for the install + $50 for the security key bypass + $50 extra because it's a 5spd. they said probably 4 hours to install it. they wanted $884 installed out the door for the compustar but i can get the alarm new in box off ebay for $300 then just get them to install it.

*CAD funds
**CAD funds + 15% tax

i don't know much about this stuff so i'm really hoping to get some help on this, i want a good alarm but i don't want to waste a ton of money either. i don't mind paying for something if it's worth it and i have around $700* to spend

Personally I'm a clifford fan, but why are you getting an alarm (ie what are you trying to protect) and what features are you getting hooked up?

Also do you want an alarm/starter or just an alarm? Keeping in mind DEI, [Viper] does not make one for a standard transmission.

I could not find anything about a Viper 785 XV at DEIs site, it's like it does not exist.

IMO a better unit would be the Compustar 2W900FM-AS... http://www.compustar.com/secur...t.htm it is an upgraded, [reworked] 2WSS-AS. 94

FYI when you buy the Compustar off eBay you will not get the lifetime manufacturers warranty on the unit even if installed by an authorized dealer.

Default Opinion on alarms

at the moment i'm not trying to protect anything...i'm doing the alarm first then i'm going to work on the car (exhaust, intake, stereo, etc...)

as for the 785, i couldn't find any info on it either, i found the info on the webpage of my local dealer

http://www.atlanticcarstereo.c....html

i am looking for an alarm/starter combo and the reason i didn't go with the 2W900FM-AS was only because of the reduced range on the starter, with the 2WSS-AS it has like 1.25mile range on the starter and that good for where i work as it's in an airport and my office is quite a ways away from my car so in the winter i can have it started and warmed up by the time i walk to it from my office.

as for the manufacturers warranty, thanks for the info on that, i didn't know about that. something to think about.

what about the install price though?? do you guys think that's reasonable?? peoples eyes have been falling out of their heads when i tell them how much it is to get installed.

any input is great thanks alot guys....

Although Compustar alarms, starters and alarm/remote starters have the best range in the industry keep in mind the 6000 foot range of the 2WSS-AS, [and any range quoted by any manufacturer] is under ideal conditions, and all sorts of things will have an effect on the range. Do not be surprised if the range is not what is stated, [no matter what bran you install].

As for price of install, that depends on a few things, all I can tell you is what wee charge, we charge the same for all alarm/starters brands.

Basic install, 5hr. @ $40 per hr. + 1 shop-mat. per hr. or portion there of, @ $3 each.
Standard transmission adds .5hr, $20 + 1 shop-mat.
Bypass module adds cost of module and 1hr, $40 + 1 shop-mat.

Other options can cost .5hr - 1hr each, [door-locks, trunk/hatch pins, starter/ign. kills and so on] some may cost more, EG: window roll up module, 2hr. on a Honda/Acura.

The above is for a basic install, a custom install can double the cost, and a show quality install can double it again

A basic install, [with no options] will take 3-5 hr. depending on car and alarm/starter going in and cost $215 + taxes.

All alarm/starter installs include light flash and hood pin, all connections are soldered, all connections are made at the metal pins in plugs, [to avoid cutting into wiring] we give a lifetime warranty on all our installs.
We also give you a 30 day no cost, no appointment needed, sensor readjustment or reprogramming.
Also no appointment is needed for any warranty issue on any of our installs.

So to answer your question $270 labour is not out of line, depending on what you get for it, [warranty and quality of install]. 94
