Default Clean a filter

I have a K & N filter. I want to clean it. What is the best way? can I just rinse it all out with water?

Yup. You should be able to find a K & N cleaning kit at almost any auto parts store.

The filter element requires a light coat of oil to maintain it's effectiveness. The oil is included in the K&N cleaning kit.

The oil actually improves the % of filtration by trapping particles on the surface of the paper element. It's a good idea to follow the manufacturer's instructions and re-oil it.

you have to re-oil it when you use K&Ns cleaning crap too. I use soapy water, dry it out and then re-oil.

Much of the K&N filters success is with the oil on the filter element. Just because the K&N filters have a million mile guarantee, it's only worth it's weight if you maintain it properly. The K&N kits should cost no more than $10.

If you can just get the oil do that and soak it for 24 hours in soapy water then rinse it out and let it dry. But you have to add the oil after that for the filter to maintain its effectiveness.

You can use household detergent to clean it. It even says that on the k&n oil spray can. SO the oil is all you need.
