Default A/c issues, '96 Civic EX.

Last weekend, we had some extreme temperatures, and I felt my a/c wasn't performing as it should. So, I went down to Pep Boys and bought the DIY refil kit, when I hooked it up it read around 18-20psi.

I hooked up the can to the low pressure side, and everytime I pressed the button it jumped up to like like 40psi. When I let go of the button and let the pressure reading fall back down, it came back to around 25psi. I did this for a little while, and the a/c got a little bit colder, although not much, and then the can finished.

Now, randomly when I drive I feel a sudden loss of power, and at a light if I blip the gas, the revs go up and fall back down so low the car shakes and automatically surges the rpm back up in order to prevent a turn-off. This things only happen with the a/c on, please help me, I'd like to get my car back to normal as soon as possible!

It sounds like the system is overcharged. I believe the total capacity is around 22 ounces, and I bet your can was 16 by itself. Evacuate it and fill it to the specified capacity.
