Default Rebuilt Vs Re-manufactured engine?

My son and i just bought a 95 GSR minus the head (stolen).
The original motor was running strong with 107K miles on it.
We want to rebuild it back to semi-original state. Would it be better to take the original engine and get it honed and reworked, or buy a re-manufactured engine, and drop it in?

All the advise is appreciated.

I do not know much about rebuilding but here is my opinion.
Get the block honed. Buy an ITR head and all necessary components. (ie manifold, intake etc)

Basically what I'm getting at is, rebuild the current block with ITR parts. This will give you reliability and power.

There is a search function that you could use to read up on how people here rebuilt thier motor.

This is for my 16 year old son, but dad wants to take it around the block, every once in a while.
Reliability is a plus for a 16 year old kid, but he's really got the "need for speed" also.

The main question is "Will money be an issue?"

There are many ways to rebuild an engine. As for re-manufactred engine, do they even have thos for integras? There is another option which involves a JDM (Japanese-Domestic Market) motor, which does not pass smog.

If you just want the car to the way it was before, then I would suggest buying a used gsr head in good condition and get some machine work done on it.

On the initial rebuild...YES.
But i want to keep the reliability thing in mind.
I like to at least decide what i'm going to do about the block, then work up from there. The theives only took the head, radiator, and back seat, so everything else is in good shape.

a re manufactured engine is a rebuilt engine built back to stock specs, i would just keep the block you have, and have somebody who knows what there doing inspect the block, check clearences see if anything needs to be done. Then purchase a used head or a rebuilt one, if used make sure the valve seals are alright and check valve face to seat contact. It should last for a long time and be very reliable

107K miles, that's hardly broken in on a Honda, replace head and call it a day.

I am kinda biased tho, cause I have 293K miles on my DA, burns no oil and runs like a top.

Well if you look on ebay you could find a stock ITR head for about 600 bucks. If you get that along with all the other accecories you need you shouldn't spend much over $1200. If it's going to be for your son, i wouldn't do too much to it. We all know the more performance part you put into a car the less reliable it becomes. Most reliable is stock, but if you wanted the added power just use a stock ITR head you should be fine.

Don't go with a type r head, you are just asking for more headaches.... the intake manifold, the compression, and the plug harness (location of sensors) and having vtec engage at 4.5K sucks. Stick with gsr parts. I agree with others are saying, rebuilt is the same as manufactuing.

i completely agree just slap on a used b16 head they flow better than the gsr and have no runners in the intake mainfold u may gain up to 5hp using the b16 head, But they r much harder to find

honda's are beasts as long as the motor was in good shape before the head was stolen you will no problems what so ever
