Default What motors would you recommend?

Hi,

When I first joined the "Honda Community" it seemed that everyone always wanted to do an engine swap either with a H22 or a B18C1 or whatnot. Well, after reading more and more I've found that there is also quite a big following for going FI. Anyways, I'm looking for a new car for a daily driver that eventually I will boost.

So, I was hoping that you guys could help me out. My only real requirements are that it's pre-2000 and can reach low 14's when I boost. What motors do you recommend? I've heard that B18C1's are good for boosting as well as D16A6's. What would you guys recommend for me?

Thanks!

Depends on what's available, and easier to install into your car. I'm a fan of the b-series turbo, but others for some reason others like the d-series. Ls/vtec is always a good idea, that's what I decided. Just save your money and do your research and get what you want and do it the right way first. And you'll be the happiest person on earth, and turn the boost up later.

Like its been said, its dependent on the amount you're willing to spend.

I really dont understand how some people swap out their D-series (yes, even the DX models) for 3500-4000 dollar B-series swaps for an extra 30-60 odd hp and 15-25ft lbs of torque, when they could have spent that 3500-4000 bucks on a decent turbo build and gain waaaay more hp and tq.

The same thing goes for LS owners....at least the ones with healthy LS engines. An LS vtec conversion with parts and labor is around 1500-2000 bucks for stock parts, and its still only about 25whp and 10wtq extra....

Sorry for the rant...

I'd recommend a 99-00 Civic EX with a d16y8 and boost it. You'll hit mid 13's or faster given driver skill on a nice turbo setup there.

Thanks Spec R. Just what I was looking for, I'll be sure to keep my eyes peeled for a 99-00 Civic EX.

As far as budget goes, I'd probably be willing to spend anywhere from $3000 - $5000 to get a reliable, daily driven, turbo setup.

b series relieable and fast will be more than your budget, and also if you plan on building up the block ect. d series turbo would be a good idea for the price range you listed.... to get a b series say b16, replace all needed parts to replace just to get it running tip top shape can get you into some money . not including after its running in perfect condition then you have to turbo it. d series is your way

Okay, thanks. So D Series will be much cheaper for the roughly the same performance? Any recommended D models besides the D16Y8? Also, I heard that the most that the D series can handle is around 200 BHP before the connecting rods start having problems. Is this true?

Thanks.

dont know about 200whp being the "limit" but the important issue here is tuning.

even if u pick up a DX 1.6 liter, they still put out far more torque and hp on a well boosted setup than any stock b-series or k-series swap would. AND u wouldnt have to give up A/C or all the other stuff that most of the swapped out guys do.

b series motors with stock blocks boosted tuned right. will max out at about 300whp well like 280+

b series also have dual overhead cam which makes them a better canidate for tuning since it has intake and exhaust cams

Looking to buy a car that will serve as a good platform for boosting.

Edit: Also, I've heard varying reports, some people say that as long as you stay out of boost you will be able to maintain good gas mileage because it will be just like the motor is running stock. Others have said the complete opposite. Which is true?

Thanks.

Id say a 92-95 EX Civic. You can usually find them for a descent price and I think that they are lighter then the 96-2000 EX's and they look sexy . I got mine for 700 bucks.

Or A 94-95 Integra LS. I say these years because you dont have to worry about converting it to OBD1. They have the long geared trannys but you could swap a GS-R tranny in later if you wanted. I paid 1500 for this one.

Both these cars will get you low 14's or better with the right turbo setup.
