Help removing crank pulley bolt
Has anyone not been able to remove a crank pulley bolt? My impact wrench has 700 lb/ft torque and it still won't come off. The car is a 1990 integra. I was able to remove the bolt on a 93 civic just with a breaker bar but this one feels like it's welded on. Car has 186k miles so the bolt has probably been off before when the last owner had the timing belt replaced.
Does anyone know a place I can just rent a wrench with 1000+ lb/ft torque or have any other ideas of what might help this come off?
Thanks!

When I removed mine, I took it up to a shop just to break it loose. All I had to do was turn the wheel to the side and the impact fit in, takes 2 minutes, then retighten to spec. I have heard of tough ones, but 700 lb/ft, holy cow. Maybe you can call some local shops and see if any have a higher rated impact. Did you have full air pressure going into the gun?
you want to use as least amount of extension possible, if you can fit the socket right on the gun thats the best. also sometimes you have to heat the bolt up with a acedaline(spelling?) torch and then remove it, i had to heat mine up for about a minute before it would come off
they may have used loctie when doing the timing belt
try map gass or an acedlyne torch then beat on her with the impact
and as said above put the socket straight on the gun

Yeah the pressure going to the gun should be fine, I had it set at 90psi then upped it to 125. It's a 30gal compressor so it'll hold pressure for a little while, at least at 90. Not like the small ones that are down to 60psi after about 5sec. I did have a 3in extension on it though but I'll see if it will fit without one. Will a propane torch work instead of an acetylene one? I have on of those. I would think though that heating the bolt would make it expand and be even harder to get out, but I'm willing to try whatever works. Tried spraying tons of pb blaster on it and letting it soak but it didn't do anything.
wow 700 mines was around 500 and it took 3 big guys to take it out
im planning on taking another one out soon and i hope it'll be more easy.
i think the only way for u to take that bolt out is to bring it to a local shop.
good luck

the crank pulley is torqued to 140 ft lbs, try a bigger compressor
i usually use a cain vise grip and a long cheater bar and jump on it a few times
the crank pulley bolt is the king of all the pains in the ***, but the tranny pin comes in at a close second

haha..it's a 30gal compressor with a 6hp motor..should be big enough. I changed the timing/balancer belts on a 98 accord yesterday and it took less than 2sec to remove the pulley bolt. It was just as fast as removing a lugnut. It's just something with that one car. It may be supposed to be torqued to 140 ft lbs, but no way this one is. I can torque a bolt to 200+ with the torque wrench, and the impact wrench will snap that right off like nothing. I've stuck a 3 foot pipe over the end of a 1/2" drive ratchet and sheared part of the head off the ratchet trying to remove a stuck axle nut, and the impact took the nut off in probably 5 seconds. This bolt is on waaaaaay the heck tighter than that. I can't really take it anywhere though since I'm parting out the car and most of the engine is gone anyways.

One of my favorite tricks is to hammer on the head of the bolt. Remember you are hammering on your crankshaft too so don't wail on it. You also don't want to peen the edges of the bolt so the socket won't fit. Best to use something like a large bolt you don't want as a drift. You will need to hit it hard enough to mush the steel a little where the bolt seats on the pulley, so tapping on it won't do you any good either.

seems like it would be harder, but actually when i did it, it came right out without any trouble, i asume you can use a propane torch, just something that gets the bolt hotter, without melting it of course

I try everything before heating it
WD40, gun scrubber (eats the dirt away like nothing), breaker bars taller than I am
I would use heating only as a last resort
