Default heel toe

why are my prelude pedals so damn far apart? i have decently large size 12 feet, and i cant seem to get the outside of my right foot on the gas pedal during braking. on my friends 01 mr2 spyder the pedals are so close and it would be cake on that car. even on my friends 99 focus the pedals are close. should i buy aftermarket covers? i hate the tacky look of those things. what other options do i have?

Bend your gas pedal closer to the brake pedal.

I tried the aftermarket pedal solution - bad idea in my case. First, I couldn't find a pedal set that would fit right and second, trying to get in the foot well by leaning over a full cage with double door bars and then trying to drill hard steel... forget it.

I tied some strap around the brake and gas pedal and used two big screwdrivers to "twist" the strap and bend the two pedals closer. It worked and only took about ten minutes...

I use aftermarket pedals on mine at it makes it much easier. my size 10.5's can catch both pedals pretty easily.

put some screws through the pedals for good measure though - I had one slip off and get cought under the accelerator.... BAD

I don't know what the pedal placement is like on preludes vs. intagras, but in my GS-R I can heel toe no problem with my little size 8 feet. What I do is place the ***** of my feet (in your case probably the arch of your foot) on the left side of my brake pedal, with my heel over the gas. As I brake I just delicately reach down with my heel (careful not to upset the brake modulation) and precisely blip the throttle, my heel hitting the throttle perfectly. It took awhile to pick up, but obviously I managed.

also tried the side of the foot thing because, not only was it more comfy, but for some reason I thought I could better manage both pedals controllwise that way. I never succeded with that method. Give the above technique a chance, it will come to you. Practice practice practice. HTH

Mine didn't at first either. Try using your foot like when parked. If you can do it while parked, then you can learn to do it while moving. If you can stand up and put your right foot at roughly a ninety degree angle from your left foot, with your right toe touching the arch of your left foot (even if you have to kind of twist your torso slightly to do it), then you can heel and toe as I described above. Try it, you might just suprise yourself. Good luck.

Yeah, that's the technique I use, but I can't do it if I'm wearing any sort of regular shoe. There's just not room for my size 12 feet under my 6'3" body to turn my leg like that. Barefoot or with driving shoes I can do it easily though.

You don't need expensive pedal covers that don't really help. Just buy a piece of plate Al and bend it to the angle of the pedal. You can get the plate at any metal supply shop. Drill out some holes, small all the way threw and then larger cones and extend the side of the pedal closer to the brake pedal however much you need. Bolts it to the accelaertor pedal. I have done that on my last two cars and it works great. It puts the brake and accelerator pedals as close together as you need them for about a dollar and some time.

Try aftermarket pedals. I have Razo race aluminium pdeals and they work great! Easier for toe-heel

i have the razo pedals where you can adjust the wideness of the accelerator pedal, there for it will be much easier to just roll you foot from the brake to the accelerator.

correct me if i'm wrong.. but this is how i understand it.

i guess you can really do whatever you want, as far as which part of your foot to use where... as long as you get the job done, in this case braking and down shifting.

but what i do is i use the ball of my foot on the brake and the right side of my foot/heel to blip the throttle.

step by step: you're coming to a corner in lets say third gear. You start braking (along with engine braking). Lets say you want 2nd gear for this turn. Brake until an appropriate time to down shift to 2nd. Keep braking, disengage the clutch/depress the pedal. Keep braking and move the gear selector to 2nd. Keep braking, blip the throttle to match revs with where your motor would spin, given your speed and gearing. Keep braking, and quickly, while the motor is revved up, re-engage the clutch. The point is to be smooth and not disrupt the car's balance. If you did it right, there should be no jerk, and the gear change should be seamless.

Is this something that could (should) be used for autocross as well, or is is overkill? I can't see it making that much of a difference in autocross with a runtime of < 60sec.

Thanks

i've never had to downshift in an autocross course...

if you had to downshift, then it might help... every hundreth counts!

i've tried and can't quite position my foot comfortably. i tried with my toes on the brake and heel on the gas...

most autox tracks ive ever been on have never needed to get into 3rd, nor back into 1st. the times i have, it was a mistake, that was when i first started.

had to force myself not to put my hand over the **** when I brake, as its the natural process on the street to be ready to shift gears when I brake. so now its just get out of the box and shift into 2nd as soon as I can and keep both hands on the wheel the whole 60 seconds.

back on the subject of heal/toe, i'm still tryin to learn myself. too distracted with the rest of the turning and braking nonsense at the moment to worry about it. i have found the main hindrance is that my brake pedal goes too low because of mushy brakes, still even after changing MC and rebuilding calipers. i also got some MOMO pedal covers for $20, real spartan looking and only using the thottle pedal to shift the area to the left closer to the brake. i feel its actaully too close now. other drivers of hondas seem to not even need to adjust the pedals for proper heeltoe, so maybe its an unecessary crutch that I just need better/more practice to get right.

I can heel-toe in my 1987 Volkswagen Jetta. And I wear a size 8 shoe. Ball of feet on the brakes, blip throttle with heel. It's kinda weird and awkward at first, but I got it down through practice. It's quite funny doing it in my beater.
