Default CD deck into a 2000 Civic

So my stock CD player died this morning. My gf has a Sony CD player sitting around that came out of her 2001 Civic after it was totaled. Couple of questions:

1) It has the wiring adapter on it. I looked online, and it appears to be the same one used for all 98+ Civics, so I should be able to plug it right in, correct?

2) It's a single DIN, and so is the stock, so why is there a mounting kit listed for it online? Do I need to get one? I'm not too familiar with Honda installs, but my VWs used to just slide in and out without a kit.

Yes, it should be plug and play.

You may have to drill holes in the factory brackets to get the Sony to ISO mount, or you can get the HON-K828 dash kit.

in a 2000 civic you need no kit, no holes to get it to work - just bolt it up.

I'll post a pic of my cousin's Premier deck with the mounting kit when I get home from work.

Does anybody have a pic of an aftermarket deck mounted with the stock pocket and no mounting kit?

I don't like how the kit makes the pocket smaller, and I didn't want to spend the $15 or whatever on it, so that's why I asked.

I'll post up mine when I'm done with it. I looked at the Helms, and it appears that the screws that hold the stock DIN deck in should line up nicely with the Sony deck.

The Metra kits pocket is bigger then most, but as has been stated a kit is not necessary, the "ISO" mounts can be used, and as B18C_EJ8 mentioned, depending on how you want the Sony to sit in the dash, [how far out or in] you may have to do a little filing, also there will be a small gap around the outside edge of the HU, as the OEM HU is trimmed to fit the hole and the Sony is not, but if you do not mind the Sony sticking out a little you can use the Sony trim to cover the gap, or if you want the Sony flush, a little custom work to make a custom trim is all that is needed 94

You're right, the pockets tend to be smaller. The kit for my sister's CRV has an even smaller pocket than the one in my cousin's Civic. Anyways, here are the pics.
