Yes you can but you have to use a seperator and un-do the LCA so the hub can move freely.
Once it's free, the axle should pop right out with slight prying.

Wow........
LCA = Lower Control Arm
I had a picture of this but dont know where it went, so I'm about to explain this in detail
At the very bottom of the Hub the LCA connects to the hub. There's a castle nut and cotter pin holding it.
-Remove cotter pin and castle nut
Alot of the time the LCA and hub are stuck together from rust and what not, so you'll more then likely have to bang on it to loosen it up, or get some PB Blaster and bang on it.
Once they are apart, all it takes is pressure on the LCA to lower it, and from there it's pretty self explanatory as to how to take them apart.
If it's really stuck on there good, you'll need a Ball Joint seperator.

Wow...you SHOULD undo the driveshaft and be able to take it out fully. Nothing sucks more then having a shaft come apart in the cv boot cause you didn't take it out... happened to me 3 times now cause I was lazy, never again now.

I do agree, It's a matter of a 32mm socket......worth the 2 secs.
But then again, this problem can be avoided if you use some string to suspend the axle.
which is what I'd do if just swapping the tranny. It may be one nut but it can be a major pain the ***, save yourself the time and trouble by using a shoelace to suspend it. Also much cheaper as the 32mm socket is around $15 at most stores.

alrght what you mean by suspending the axle with a string clear my head up a little
the only reason why i dont wnat to get a 32mm is because i have to buy the wrench for it too!! but if it gets too hard ill just have to go and buy it then
Want to get rid of these for sale or trade for some HID's

Don't pull on the shaft. Undo the castle nut on the bottom of the hub and pop the balljoint off. Then unscrew the axle nut, make sure you punch the tab out first. Push the axle back through itas you pull the hub away, it should swing out pretty easily. Now use a pickle fork or screwdriver to pry the axle out of the tranny, DO NOT pull it out or you'll be buying a new axle. You probably won't be able to remove the axle from the car through the shock assembly, but you can definitely get it far enough away to remove the tranny if you're taking the motor out from the top. If you are doing it from the bottom/side, you need to take out most of the suspension anyway. If you need help AIM me, I might actually be in Boston today.
There is no reason whatsoever to go through all the trouble of taking it out of the hub if he's only pulling the tranny.......
-Undo the LCA/Lower Ball joint
-Tie a string around the axle.
-Tie the other end of the string to something sturdy, anything stationary.
-Make sure there's no serious slack in the string
-Now, pry the axle out, it should pop out fairly easy.
-The axle (b/c of the string) will be held in air in the position it should be. Otherwise, it'd just be hanging down.
One thing to the OP: If your going to buy the 32mm socket, you don't need the 1/2in drive WRENCH, you need a BREAKER BAR - that S.O.B. will be on there TIGHT..

No, he won't have to take out the UCA/hub, but pretty much everything else should come out if he's doing it from the bottom/side. The LCA, radius rod, shock/spring assembly, etc. It makes it a lot easier so you aren't banging your head on stuff while pulling it out, though I know it's not neccessary. Here's a guide for taking it out.
Now I'll wait for a post about the bitch pin...

I've snapped 4 breaker bars getting my factory automatic shafts out. Air or Electric impact guns are a nice tool to have, invest some money and get the right tools. Electric impacts are strong enough to undo most bolts that would snap a breaker bar, but not strong enough to undo a stubborn or stripping bolt.
I have 4 32mm nuts, I've recently snapped one on an axle nut, that's how tight some of them are. I don't bother to take off the little kink in the shaft, I usually let the impact force bend it out for me.

Thanks alot man.
I do have 1 still, but it's mine
Check out eBay, they're cheaper these days and you can find them in the US, without $250 S/H. I paid $600 for mine in 2002.
Good luck on your work, if I was in the area I'd lend a hand.
