Default a/c removal

here's the deal... my a/c is broken, the part that i need to replace will cost over $100. I hate a/c anyway... i like the windows down. so, my question is, does it do anything performance wise to your engine? not to sound like a ricer, but if i don't use it, why not take it out and maybe sell it? since it's one less pully to turn, wouldnt it make the acceleration a little quicker? maybe i'm an idiot... sorry if this is stupid.

i'll be the first to tell you, you aren't going to see any noticable increase in performance. It'll make your car a little lighter but other than that, if you never even turn it on, its just sitting there. Yes the pully spins when its not on but it isn't much. I took my pulley off cause the tensioner broke off and i see no differance.

However, i am also interested in removing my AC to clean up the bay a bit and get soem weight out of the front since i am never going to use it again. Hopfully someone knows the safe way to remove it...I dont wanna get blasted in the face with cold **** when I take it all apart.

It will free up a tiny bit of hp, but only when operating, if the compressor clutch is disengaged (ac off) the ac pulley spins free without resistance. The main advantage is the weight savings but dont expect to really notice anything.

alright... pretty much what i expected. i feel the same as you about cleaning up the engine bay a little, and making it a LITTLE lighter. my haynes manual has a complete removal of the a/c. for the haynes manual!

you can relieve the pressure by unscrewing the caps and pushing down on the schreider valves, just dont get it on your skin or breath it. The right way is to take it to a shop and have it sucked out.

When I swapped motors I pulled everything A/C out. It's a 90 LS and nothing came out when i pushed down on that valve, mabye because I never used it in 2 yrs. The coolant is nasty stuff so BE CAREFUL if you DIY.

When I had my Teg, I removed the A/C.

Pros:

1. it is known to free up a few ponies.
2. Less weight in the engine bay (which can also be a con) (somewhere around 30lbs)
3. Made more room to work in the engine bay
4. One less thing to break

Cons:

1. Expensive to put back in if you ever want it back.
2. Less weight in the engine bay (could pose a potential traction issue)

Those are my thoughts on it. Like I said, I removed mine. Compressor, lines, condenser and the whole deal. I had not regrets about it, but, I also did not daily drive the car.
