Default Why is my car using so much coolant?

Ive noticed this problem for the past week now. I realized this when I was checking my oil and decided to check all of my other fluids when I come to realize that my coolant reservior is completely empty. I then refilled to the top. A few days later I check it again and it barely has any coolant left so I fill it up again for the second time. I then checked it again today for the third time and its right and minimum line so I filled it up a little more. My question is does this appear to be normal? I figured that since my car has been running with very little coolant for who knows how long it takes a little more than usual to cycle through the car. Today it smelled like coolant and a burning type of smell. Is it possible that there might be a leak somewhere? I turned the heat on and nothing but cool air blows out when the reservoir is full. What could the problem be?

most likely there is a leak in the cooling system .. have the system pressure tested to properly locate the leak..

is your car putting white smoke?

Have you checked your oil to make sure it is not going in there?

Have you checked your trans fluid to make sure that it is not going in there (if you have an auto)?

^^ how could coolant end up in the transmission?

perhaps you were just very low on coolant for a while and when the overflow was filled up the first time the radiator sucked it all in to replace what was missing. sounds like you probably have a leak tho.

gotta check the radiator when ur reservoir is full and look for a dark spot on the radiator because if there is a leak there it will evaporate (causing the smell) before it drips on the ground or shows signs of leaking elsewhere.

nope; try again...

well, in automatic trannies, the cooler lines goto the radiator endtank... so it's one of the things to check for... but very rare.

.... i second for checking external leaks...

http://www.autozone.com has a free tool that you can pressurize the system when cold... then look around hoses, clamps, heater core, etc. for the leak... if the pressurized tester shows no signs of leakage...

next step would be to rule out what Y said, "is your car putting white smoke?" sign of head gasket leak

I dont think it would be the thermostat. It was replaced last March along with my new engine. I checked the car for the problem and it appears that it is leaking from the radiator at the bottom. Is it it possible that there might be a crack somewhere?

BTW its a Manual and the oil looks fine and there no visible leaks around the valve cover showing that it might be a head gasket leak.

congrats, u isolated the leak... check the clamp/hose to be sure... i can't see it for you...

use the pressurizer/tester mentioned earlier that u can rent for free from autozone...if you need to.

just don't delay this too long... air pockets in the system will eventually lead to a blown head gasket= $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
