Default Did head swap...differently...now timing is off...

Did a swap over the weekend...I had never done a head swap before but a friend that was helping me had helped another guy do his...this is the weird part...when we put the head back on, he said we were supposed to have cylinder 2 & 3 TDC and have the notches on the cam gear straight up and down...everwhere else i heard, cylinder 1 & 4 are supposed to be TDC and the cam gear notches parallel to the top of the block (with the UP spoke up)...now the timing is way off... has anyone done this before?...should i redo the timing belt with 1 & 4 TDC and have the notches even with the block? BTW...its a D16Y8 head on D16Y7 block...mini me...

uhh..... thats totally wrong. When you put the cam to TDC thats cylinder 1 thats TDC. So why put the cam to TDC and the piston not? Redo it.

Your friend sucks. You win. The notches on the cam gear should be lined up with the head surface. UP should be pointing straight up, hence why it says UP.

also make sure when you line up the up mark, that the white mark on the crank pulley is lined up with the timing mark on the timing cover.
