My sohc vtec ZC pulled 166.1 hp and 147.6 tq at only 5 psi on the greddy turbo. 2 degrees retarded timing and 32 psi fuel pressure.

I am very pleased with those numbers, since my coupe with the D16Z6 only made 163 hp and 144 tq at 7.5 psi with the same turbo on it. This engine is actually making more power with 2.5 psi less boost!

BTW- I'm running 250cc injectors with the blue box and 255lph in-tank pump for fuel, and the exhaust is only 2 1/4" piping right now with no cat. This car is much faster than my coupe was on 8psi, so it's definitely in the 13's on only 5psi! I couldn't be happier.

Next I'm going to try the ZEX 59300 cam and do some before/after dynos at 5psi to see if that cam is any good with boost, since nobody seems to know for sure. Then the boost goes up and the 310 injectors go in- as I try to reach the 12's with the greddy turbo kit. Wish me luck!

Why is it better? Well, the only thing I changed on the turbo kit is I upgraded from a stock eclipse intercooler on to the small greddy intercooler- so it seems that is part of it, but the intercooler was totally cold after the runs, so it seems that the air isn't really getting heated that much at only 5psi. So I'm not so sure if the intercooler was a big part of it or not.

I ran the same exact exhaust w/no cat on the other car so thats not it.

The only other thing that should make a difference is the engine itself. This motor is a japan-spec sohc vtec ZC. It is identical to the D16Z6 except that it has slightly higher compression and is rated at 130hp compared to 125hp for the Z6.

That still doesn't seem to explain the huge difference though. The coupe on 5.5psi of boost only made 150 hp and 135 tq. So it made 16hp and 12tq less at .5psi more boost than this motor. Wierd, but I'm not complaining!

 

hmm, i think vtc_civic said something about how the greddy black box (somewhat related to the blue box) was tuned for the zc in japan and they just brought it over to usdm sohcs. maybe it has a better tuned fuel curve? oh i dunno...

 

On the older kits the black box is there basically to stop the ECU from seeing boost and throwing a code. The BDFPR is what added the extra fuel in the older kits.

The blue box does what the black box did, but also controls the injectors to add extra fuel instead of using the old method of raising the fuel pressure.

The blue box gave me a perfect 12.5:1 A/F ratio on the dyno on the D16Z6. So the fuel was perfect on that motor. I didn't use a wideband O2 this time, since I knew the fuel was perfect on the other motor with the stock 240cc injectors. I just lowered the fuel pressure a bit on this motor since its using 250cc injectors assuming the A/F ratio would be about the same.
