Upped the boost on my SOHC VTEC! Dyno results.....
I'm running the TD04-15G Greddy kit and intercooler, blue box, 255 in-tank pump,
B&M Commandflo, and RC 310 injectors.
The motor is stock internals, with ARP headstuds, Cometic HP headgasket, and ZEX 59300 cam. Ignition is stock.
All runs were on 92 octane, NGK BKR6E plugs gapped at .030, ignition timing at 1 degree retarded, open downpipe.
On 5 psi, it made 164.1 whp and 143.3 tq. A/F ratio was 12.5:1.
On 7 psi, it made 189.2 whp and 169.3 tq. A/F ratio was 12.5:1.
On 9 psi, it made 203.5 whp and 184.0 tq. A/F ratio was 12.0:1.
On 10 psi, it made 212.2 whp and 190.8 tq. A/F ratio was 12.0:1.
Not bad, huh? I was really surprised that I was able to run only 1 degree retarded ignition timing all the way up to 10 psi on pump gas, especially since the air temp in the dyno area was 90 degrees. Usually it's like 60 degrees around here.
And the runs above 7 psi I tuned it a little richer because I was wanted to be a little on the safer side. Maybe if I leaned it out to 12.5:1 at the higher boost levels I could make 215 whp or so.
Anyway, I'm really happy with the results! My goal for this car was 12's with the sohc and baby turbo, and it looks like it's going to be cake, since on 5 psi it already ran a 13.3 and several 13.4's.
I should be good for mid 12's now, but I still don't have any drag radials or slicks, so I don't know if I'll be able to run in the 12's on traction limited stock tires like I have been. What do you guys think?

Hey... that's some good/awesome numbers especially with the blue box and also considering your setup is a non HONDATA equipped. You must have the magic touch on tuning that sucka.

man, that's some nice results. I'm impress. I almost have the same setup you got. Hopefully my car would run the same.

how does the greddy blue box work, haven't heard much about it. Those are some excellent numbers. On 92 octane do you get any pinging or detenation? NICE

The blue box limits the MAP sensor voltage to the ecu to prevent a CEL due to the MAP sensor reading boost. It also takes that same voltage reading from the MAP sensor and uses it to read how much boost you are running (up to about 12 psi), and then alters injector pulsewidth accordingly to supply the additional needed fuel.
Yes, the car ran clean all the way- no pinging at all.
I did dyno the car with the stock cam at 5 psi. It made peak horsepower at 6600 rpm of 164.9 whp and 147.6 tq. After 6600 rpm the stock cam dropped off on power.
Then I installed the ZEX cam, and it made 164.9 whp but 143.4 tq. Same peak hp, and 4 ft-lbs loss in torque. But the ZEX cam made power all the way to 7200 rpm.
Basically from 6600 rpm on up the ZEX cam made more power. From 6700-7200 rpm it held the hp right at about 164 hp. There was no drop off after 6600 rpm like the stock cam.
But the bad part is the whole rest of the rev range, from 2000-6600 rpm, the ZEX cam lost about 3-6 whp and tq. Only above the 6600 mark was it better.
I thought this would hurt the 1/4 mile performance, but it didn't. I made 7 runs on the stock cam and 7 runs with the ZEX cam. Both days had about the same atmospheric conditions, temp, etc.
Despite the fact that I had worse average 60' times on the day I ran the ZEX cam, overall it averaged fractionally better ET's and trapspeeds than the stock cam.
For this reason, I am keeping it in the car.

any reason you chose the zex cam insted of crane or some other company?
i am shocked you lost your bottom end! i wonder why
sorry i am asking so many questions but i have a sohc turbo. your engine is the d16y8 correct?

I chose the ZEX cam because ZEXMAN runs it in his 10 sec., 420+whp turbo and nitrous D16.
After talking to him, he said he never tried a stock cam, but did try another manufacturers turbo cam and lost 25 whp. I was leery of using it since it has so much lift and duration, seemingly too much duration for a turbo motor. But I figured if it's working for him, it couldn't be too bad. And it may not perform all that great at low boost levels, but maybe it works better at higher boost.
I don't feel like changing it back to the stock cam just to see the difference it makes at like 10 psi, so I'm just going to keep it. The car is making good power, so I'm happy.
My motor is a JDM D16A SOHC VTEC ZC. All it is, is a D16Z6. It is identical in every way.

nice numbers just with 5 psi
nice torque numbers too !!
god... nice, cheap setup for the power !!!!
why r u just using 310 injectors only??
and u don't have any ignition upgrade, just colder plugs.. cool !

The 210 was made with a Zex cam and no exahust then right? Have you considered running a Y8 intake manifold? Large plenum, should help, especially fr higher boost levels

Right. I ran the stock greddy open downpipe on the dyno.
I run 2 1/4" piping with 2- 18" resonators that dumps under the middle of the car on the street. No cat. Total piping length is only like 5 feet, and it's very loud.
I dyno'd the car at 5 psi with the exhaust, and with open downpipe. It made absolutely no difference on the dyno- I don't know why. Maybe since it's so short, my 2 1/4" setup is acting like a 3" full exhaust. But I dyno'd open downpipe because that is how I run it at the track.
Once I get the money I may do a 3" exhaust and maybe a custom downpipe.
I might have a custom setup done where the cast elbow that connects the turbo to the downpipe is eliminated. We would then custom make/weld an external dump for the wastegate/actuator, seperate from the exhaust exiting the turbine itself. That should eliminate the problems with the internal wastgate having trouble controlling the boost. It would in effect now be an external wastegate.
I have no plans for the intake manifold as of yet, but we'll see. Has anyone swapped to the Y8 manifold and actually documented the gains/losses on a turbo D16? Or how about using one of those other aluminum manifolds with a big plenum and runners?

i think swapping out the Y8 intake manifold is just a cheap way of performance hehee
just save more money and swap out a better manifold, carbon?

Re: Upped the boost on my SOHC VTEC! Dyno results..... (xbird)
Thats kick *** man...I wish I still had my Greddy turbo (TD04H-15C) setup on my B18B. I miss the low end power and quickness my car had. I am not running a T3/T04E turbo setup on my B18B. I am problably only running low 14's
My car just won't go any faster!
I wish I could have seen your results before I went out and spent the money on this other turbo set. oh well....
This is great news for my friends 98 civic EX. I am getting him to do a SOHC greddy turbo setup.

curious to see the dyno slips....
im really wanting to get my car running 10psi soon.
im getting a 2.5" custom SS dp next week.
