emissions question for cali residents and other states with smog
ok, i know some of you guys out there stress so much over smog issues. i live in TN where there isn't any as of yet. but, just curious as to how many people here go to the trouble of maybe slapping in the bone stock engine, airbox, ecu and all that to pass smog. i know alot of people are gettin good and fast at doing engine swaps. reason i'm asking is, i know alot of people are putting out crazy power with disregard of smog testing, and just curious as to how you beat the system...............long live me not having smog tests yay
Knowing people in the right places helps but a lot of people (in Cali) go through and BAR their car where they put in a "legal" swap and it passes inspection and they don't have to worry any more.
Run with a gutted cat, keep a new spare on hand in the garage tho. My friend runs a dump on his EM1. He just recently got a State Ref ticket, claimed his exhaust "broke". Better than a modified exhaust ticket I guess. He kept his stock piping tho, so its all just a matter of a few bolts and he's running legal... If you dont like hooking the tube from valve cover to intake up, then atleast hook up a clogged tube or somthing, if cops see it disconnected you'll get a slap on the wrist. If you like the whole free flowing idea you can do wut I did. All I had was 4-2-1 header, stock cat, stock cat back piping, took the muffler off tho. More throaty sound, could have been better if i had a hi-flow or gutted cat. As far as engine swaps go...all i can say is act stupid if they ask questions. If you enjoy doing a quick swap just to pass, then more power to ya. I live in San Diego...I hate the laws here. Just some ideas...I'm sure there are more wiser people than I, but atleast mine are rather cheap and easy.
I personally know of many Honda's that are very fast and 100% smog legal. 200+hp on 91 octane. Of course, you can change to a different fuel map, put in the race gas, and make your pass. Open a hole in the ozone right above you.
Not difficult at all with a Honda. That's the WHOLE idea with Hondas. Smarter. More efficient. Why the hell are you driving a 1.6 liter 4 cylinder?! If you want to make big, dirty power, then high displacement with a supercharger and nitrous is your cup of tea.
Out here in CAli, we enjoy clean air. If you don't like clean air, well then you'll like San Bernardino.
