91 Accord LX Radio Removal.
I have a friend that wants to take out the factory radio and put in an aftermarket CD player but says he cant figure out how to get it out. What do you do to take out the factory radio?
I have a 1991 EX. I swapped my radio for a cd deck last sunday. THIS POST DIRECTED AT NOBODY. DO NOT READ THIS POST. THIS POST WAS WRITTEN BY A 17 YEAR OLD WHO BOUGHT HIS CAR 4 WEEKS AGO.
This is how I did this...which was how it said to do it in the service manual...there are probably other ways, but I dont know them.
What I did was start by taking off the console, which i think was like 8 screws. You start back at the E brake, and then eventually take of the shift lever ****, and then you can (with some effort) remove the entire console as one piece.
Then you can get under the ash tray. You remove the ashtray holder (3 screws), and then you should see 2 screws that go up towards the stereo, remove these. There also might be (I can't remember) some screws that hold the tray, that goes directly under the stereo, in place...obviously they would need to go...if they exist.
Now here's where I got lucky! The two screws that i mentioned before that "go up" are attached to a metal bracket, and there is supposed to be one or two screws that attach the back of the stereo to this bracket. You're gonna have to find a way to detach the screws (if they are there) that connect the stereo to the metal bracket.
If you succed at this, the radio AND tray thingy should slide right out. The tray is connected to the radio by two little bracket things near the front on either side of the unit.
I know this is unbelievably vague. Post any questions, but I don't make any promises that I'll be able to help.

nah cats you got it pretty much solid
altho i will say that you can prob have to reach back and unplug the harness before you can 'slide' out the radio as its a pain to get out with that tray,
yo take some pics, i cant figure out how to put my factory back in, i wonder if that tray has two lower screws on the bottom like cats speculated, cats you know what im talking about. Id actualy like to know if you can use that properly hold in the aftermarket CD player
good luck, the plastic trim on the whole dash bends a little so dont be afraid to yank if you gotta, but slowly

shhhh I was leaving the wire harness as a suprise!!!
Anyway, as for putting an aftermarket back in, there isn't much holding mine in. I re-attached the metal bracket thing at the back, and then I put the "sleeve" ,that the unit slides into, where the unit will eventually go, and bent up the little metal tab things on the top and sides of the sleeve.
After that, it was pretty much "press-fit". I put in the tray, which now is being held by nothing, and put the deck in its sleeve.
It was a pretty damn good fit. It doesn't wobble around, or slip back when I put the face plate on, or plug my I-Pod in. But like I said, there isn't much holding it in. There are no screws attaching the deck to anything, and the tray is no longer attached to the deck like it can be with the stock radio...but it's in.
As for the "mystery screws" , elf, short of taking apart my console again I have no idea. But I will flip through my service manual to see if these screws exist.
Oh yeah, regarding the console removal, it's really hard to get it over the e-brake handle. My rear brakes are set up pretty tight, so the handle didn't want to go up enough. Long story short...I broke the three little tabs that connect the E-brake part of the console with the shift boot part of the console. So be careful.

yea on the 92 ex the ebrake is a bitch to take off for this, i deff hear ya.
my bottom pocket hole thingy under the head unit keeps popping out letting the head unit slide down as well, but if i let it go its just tilted and stays there, kinda like the 5th gen how its titled as well, so i might rig it to stay that way and shave off the un needed pocket edge sticking out, i dont know, i got a wire from the aux in. in the back coming through that pocket via a whole i carved XD.
so eh we'll see how it works, im replacing the engine right now anyway so one probleem at a time

Okay, I have the 91 accord service manual on my lap as I type this, so I'll try not to be so vague.
With regards to the mystery tray-holding-in screws...they don't exist. HOWEVER, after staring at the service manual picture (there's only one bloody pic), the 2 screws that attach to the metal bracket at the back DO appear to connect to the tray (at the back of the tray).
Here are the steps --word for word-- outlined in the manual for stereo sound system removal:
1. Remove the floor console.
2. Remove the ashtray.
3. Remove the instrument panel (I skipped this step. Removing the bloody instrument panel didn't look like it would expose anything usefull. The instructions are mind-bogglingly extensive. I lie. Im just too lazy)
4. Remove the 2 screws, then pull the stereo radio/cassette player out of the instrument panel.
5. Disconnect the 16-P connector and the antenna lead.
I'll keep my thinking cap on and see if I have any revelations about the whole removal/installation of the stereo.

do not need to remove the instrument panel at all
the 2 skrews are underneath the cd player
get a mounting kit, and the cd player wont move, you will lose your pocket
if you have an armrest on the drivers seat, remove it first, or your floor console wont come out
