Default Thinking about getting illuminas whats your guys opinion.

I know if have seen a few threads but nothing really on the illuminas alone. I will be using skunk 2 coilovers and it i will be for my hatch, i am rocking the blues right now but would like alittle adjustment. Plus i like to slam the hatch to the ground!!! No honestly it is my dayly driver and i was thinking that would be a nice upgrade. What do you guys think? Oh do these work well with lowered cars?

Thanks

illuminas are a great shock, i totally recommend them.

but they arent going to be any better than any other shock for slamming and little to no shock travel.

they do have a lifetime warranty, but im not sure if thats contingent if you break them because of bottoming out. theyd be able to know if they checked.

using ground control extended top hats is the easiest way youre going you gain back the shock travel if you insist on riding low.

I have had Illumina's before. I found they didn't sit even on all four corners. (I have had multiple cars with the same prob)

I would recommend KONI. They sit even, ride stiff around corners but won't break your tailbone.

i never had that problem. i would recommend illuminas as well. ran those on my crx for about 3 years and plan on running those on the civic as well.

I have the Illuminas with 'matched' springs. I like the ride settings and can really feel a difference (just put them on a week ago). My only gripe is that it was supposed to lower the car 1 1/4 inches and it didn't lower them at all. I even measured because I was puzzled

What springs did you get? And are you sure they are specific for the 88-91 civic/crx..?

I think they are a fine part, I just rather the konis even with the extra cost. But nothing is wrong with Illuminas at all.

Since he said 'matched' springs and i think i remember his thread about it, they are the springs that come in the "suspension kit" offered by Tokico for the 88-91 Civic. It consists of 4 shocks along with 4 springs. I had that same kit but never installed the springs. The springs were tall looking and i could tell they wouldnt lower the car by much.

With the mods in the thread below, you can set your car pretty low and still have a fully functional suspension.

Also, here is a question I asked Tyson a little while ago via IM. Maybe it will help others.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">&gt;EG6_GUY (3:23 PM 4/17/2006): Tyson,
I will be picking up some Illuminas very soon. Just wondering how the shaft is held in place when the top mount is installed/removed. ? Allen wrench?

&gt;Tyson (4:00 PM 4/17/2006): yeah its an allen key. others might have the same question, why not ask publicly..</TD></TR></TABLE>

Most likely the adjuster has to be removed to reach the allen key area. Probably with a tiny flathead screwdriver or something like that.

You got it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...%3AIT
They were said to lower the car 1.25 in., but still haven't "settled" as of yet. No big deal to me though,...just wanted a comfortable ride when I wanted and able to hug the turns at the occassional autox events. Dropping wasn't really a concern to me.

By the way, when set to the softest level, I've noticed that the car is much more manageable at hight speeds, like on the highway. Not as squirly as it used to be. Very comfortable drive.
Hardest setting is rough, but almost feels like it leans into curves. I'm happy with my investment.

Yeah, I drove my crx from NJ to Michigan State one summer with them on the softest setting - felt like a Caddy.

Generally tend to drive it 2 fr / 3 rear. Had em for years, and love them. I did get the set w/Eibach Pros, and the car looks slammed, even though it should have dropped it only 1 1/2". I'm not complaining.
