Default Transmission service question (search is down)

Well, search is down and I'm planning to do some work on my car tomorrow (namely tranny/coolant flush). Well, anyways...normal 10w30 motor oil is what Honda recommends for my 89' Si HB transmission, right?

The tranny was rebuilt a few years ago so it has no grinds (well, a bit of reverse, but I blame that on my cousin grinding the car into reverse a few times *grrrrr*), and shifts somewhat smoothly, but feels a bit notchy at times.

Anyone have any recommendations on what fluid to use? I'm gonna go pick some up tomorrow morning so I'd like to know what I need/how much of it.

Thanks!

I reccomend honda mtf or pennzoil syncromesh..Im pretty sure its 1.5qt for the d-series trannys ,havent messed with them in a while..And that reverse grind is no big deal,,even brand new it grinded,,But its no big deal,,I dont even believe there is a snycro in reverse anyway..Just put it in 1st before you put it in reverse and you wont hear that noise..It says that right in the manual..

it recommends honda MTF but in case of low oil it says 10w-30 or 10w-40 can be subsituted, i wouldnt fill up the whole thing with 10w-30 if it was my car

Running 10w30 and no problem. All D series up to 95 use 10w30.

Yeah, that's kinda what I heard too, but will I see any gains in smoother shifting/a less notchy feel if I switch to MTF or Syncromesh? My tranny is currently filled with 10w30 I believe. Will 10w30 + some Lucas oil stabilizer have the same effect (slightly thicker)?

Thanks!

Alright, I've decided to go with 3 quarts of OEM Honda MTF + a few squirts of Lucas oil stabilizer .

Quick question for the tranny fluid change though...I can fill through the fill level bolt, right? Just undo that and stick in an angled tube then dump MTF fluid in from there after draining the tranny? When it's full the excess should just leak out from the fill level area, right?

Sorry, it's been a while since I've done any work on any D-series tranny .

Thanks!

Darn, now I'm confused. Well, 10w-30 then cause that's what I'm currently running, lol.

But back to my other question...I can fill from the fill level bolt, right? I'd rather not remove the starter to gain access to the fill bolt if I don't need to.

Thanks!

drain with the lower bolt the square one you can put your 3/8" ratchet in, clean the bolt of metal shards (when you finish, put the bolt back and tighten it).

fill with the bolt about 6 inches above that. i belive its a 17 or 19mm dont rem.

put a oil pan under it, get a long flexible funnel, and fill it from the top, or get a pump style filler.

fill it with 10w30 untill the oil pours out of the filling hole. (its about 2.5-3 quarts)

Yeah, I bought 3 quarts just in case haha . Thanks for the scan.

Actually...what's SE/SF grade oil? I just bought some Castrol GTX 10W30 (SAE?)

Did I get the wrong oil? lol.

What about Amsoil 5w-30 synthetic synchromesh? Will running it have a negative effect?

you are o.k. - we run Honda MTF in ours - the reason it doesn't say Honda MTF in the manual is because they didn't have MTF back in 88-91

Can anyone answer that Amsoil 5w-30 synchromesh question? I'd like to try running it but not if it's gonna mess up my tranny.
