tranny fluid, synthetic or synchromesh
i just did the search on the gm synchromesh. going to get some tomorrow. but the question is, when i did my swap, i drained the old and put in 10w30 synthetic. the chiltons manual said 10w30 and the guy at honda said that was fine. i havent hurt anything or done anything that would cause the synchromesh to not work properly. BTW, i used castrol full synthetic, doesnt seem as peppy as it did before, i mean it just feels like theres thick 90 weight gear oil in there. what do you guys think?

10w 30 in the tranny itself...? no problem with that......... but the syncromesh will make your tranny feel as smooth as butter....

i did a search on google for gm synchromesh and found out from pennzoil that they manufacture all of the gm, quaker state, and texaco synchromesh oils, but i guess you can get it under the pennzoil name for half or more of the price if gm stuff. gm just ups the price cause its got gm on the bottle. going to go today to get some of the pennzoil stuff to put in and i guess well see

I just purchased a brand new ITR tranny from the Acura dealer.
I filled it up with Genuine Honda Manual Transmission Fluid per Honda and it shifts smoother than anything I've ever felt.
If your tranny grinds, then it isn't the fluid itself, it's your tranny.
Once synchros are damaged I doubt there's any miracle fluid that will save it. It's more a mental thing if you think your tranny is better with some sort of tranny miracle oil IMO. It's called "the placebo effect."

It wasn't cheap.
While we're discussing trannies, I thought I'd take this time to also say that puck-style clutches suck *** for street-driven cars.
Since I've had a 6-puck clutch disc I have broken 3 final drive assemblies in my old Type R tranny. Some may say it's my driving, but if so then my fiancee's B16A hatch (which I've driven more than my own car) should have had tranny problems some time in the past 4 years that I've been driving her car.
The difference?
She has a full-faced ACT modified street disc.
This time I got smart and thrwe in a full faced stock disc with a new double diaprham Clutchnet pressure plate. The set-up grips hard as ****, yet it is way smoother and doesn't shock the **** out of the tranny internals.
BTW: Anyone like how I dodged the original question? I'll be running for office soon...

about the pennzoil making the GM stuff, this is true. so far, the only parts store that I have seen sell it is Murrays. It is 4.99 a bottle compared to the price at GM's part conter of 11.99 a bottle.

My advice is DON'T.
You need some friction in a tranny in order for the synchros to work properly, and I'm just not sure about what synthetic motor oil would do in a manual tranny.
I'd stick to factory recommendations which are usually 10W30 regular engine oil for older trannies and D series stuff, and Genuine Honda MTF for LSD-equipped trannies and B series stuff.
This debate will probably end up like other debates concening motor oil, which sparkplugs, which plug wires, etc. - it's all personal preference. I can say that in the plugs and wires cases that O.E works best and it has been proven, that's one reason why I trust Honda for my tranny fluid too.

ya i spent like an hour calling around this morning and no parts stores had it, pennzoil that is. so i just broke down and bought the gm stuff. they did have it. I just put it in and god damn, i only went like ten miles including 6 on the freeway and it is alot smoother through the gears and no reverse grind. you know that little annoying gring when you try to put it into reverse. gone. i would have to say im impressed so far, and all the other posts say itll take about 500 miles to really feel the difference. but like i said, its instant with mine. two thumbs up.
