I'm wondering if this is part of the problem. Running a 12valve obd1 vtec-e motor (without vtec) on an a obd0 16 valve SI ECU might freak out the ECU. The fuel maps are all different.

So... is the Check Engine Light on or not?
if it is, look at the ECU and count how many long/short blinks it is producing on the small red LED.
