Default torque wrench ques.

I need to get a torque wrench and I'm not sure which one to get. I just need it for the S. things like oil bolt, diff, tranny bolt, lug nuts, brakes. What can I grab at the local Advanced or pep boys, autozone?

You can actually rent them from autozone, etc. I would not suggest buying one from there however, they are free to rent, just leave a security deposit.

If you want to buy one, go with atleast Craftsman or higher.

rental torque wrench? no thank you, it must been dropped and used as breaker bar by ricer and a like.

100-150 will get you some nice one, snap-on or craftsman are great.

You shouldn't need a torque wrench for the oil/diff/tranny bolts or brake bolts. Use common sense and don't over-tighten, keeping in mind the size of the bolt and the aluminum it's being threaded into is soft.

I use a torque wrench on lug nuts just for peace of mind. Unless you're putting an engine together, don't worry about using a snap on or craftsman torque wrench. Get some anti-seize, preferably the copper stuff, and use that on your lug nuts.

Is it calibrated in Ncm or Ft-Lb?

I have a craftsman digitork 1/2 for lug nuts and a 3/8 for engine bolts and lower torque applications. I have had them for many years (5+) and they hold up well. Do not buy a cheap one or rent one. One mistake will cost you much more than buying a decent one.

Renting one is just fine for something like lug nuts or engine oil drain bolts. I agree though, for anything internally related, I would just buy one. I was just saying that he could rent one if he needed.

Craftsman digitork rock

Get an electronic one.

I use a Snap-On digital and an older Craftsman clicker.

For the stuff your looking at using it for, but a cheapie one. Rent one? If you ever decide to do engine work, then you need a much higher quality unit. I bought mine at one of those dollar stores for under $10 (the clicker type). Before my friend did some testing with the one he bought at the same store with their shop's very expensive ones, I would have thought he was crazy. After seeing him use it on his car while he has access to the other ones, I became convinced.

(No matter which torque wrench you choose to buy, only use it to tighten not loosen stuff.) I've had mine for over three years now and still am very happy with my $10 torque wrench.

Get the snap on one with the adjustable **** which clicks when you reach the specified torque level.
