Default Noob Question

What does it mean when everyone talks about ek's or eg's, etc. I am completely new to civics and am looking for a breakdown of the different terms and generations. More specifically I'd like to know everything about the hatchbacks, they are my new found love in life.

Thank you very much that helped a lot. Are there minimal changes between the Eg and Ek hatchback? I've really only noticed the tail lights are different. I'm going to go look at a 92 eg with an h22 swap and a 94 eg with a b20 turbo swap tonight...wish me luck
