I have a stock intake and I want to get a mushroom-type filter from eBay. Does the 3" one fit? Also, do I take out the whole black resinator/box thing that is in there right now? Thank you in advance. By the way I have a 1999 GS.

But the diameter of the stock intake is 3" correct? And if I got a mushroom filter would I have to take out the black resinator?

I guess I am going for short ram but I don't have a lot of money, so I just wanted to upgrade the air filter until I save enough money for a better and CARB legal intake.

from what i hear, K&N filter have great air flow capacity, but their filtering is shitty .... i've been told that after market intakes don't really do the car anything ... OEM is best ...
correct me if i'm wrong?

the paper filter that is stock is ****. fram or whatever make they are. k&n have excellent flow and filter well as long as you take care of it and clean it and oil it. as far as aftermarket intakes adding power I've heard both ways. but I'm sure even if it does add power its not a lot. if its even noticable.

Well, AEM is ur best bet since it is CARB legal. If you want to just swap in a high flow air filter, go to Checker Auto parts and pick up a RU-2820 for only $30. There is a thread on how to cut it up and **** since i dont feel like typing how to do it for u. Search for DIY ice box, K&N, RU-2820.etc and you will find it.

you have to remove your stock air box, then open both sides of a soup can and stick it in your stock intake.... this is kinda like a adapter so the intake will work.... it sounds ghetto but hey its cheap and works, just make sure you dont get no chicken noodle soup in your intake manifold
I say go k&n. I bought mine for two main reasons. Well three actually. First is that the stock filter even at oriley's or atozone cost 35 bucks. The k&n was close to 60, but after the first cleaning it paid for itself. Second, no parts stores around me ever have the stock paper filter in stock. 3rd i can use the stock box and pass emissinons and not look like i am trying to go fast or be cool. I would also remove the resnator. You dont have to but it does make it sound a bit louder and better in my oipinion.
definitely the KnN is worth it because not for the power "gains" everyone talks about but because you can use time after time. if you buy a stock air filter for like 20-25$, ull have to replace it sooner or later, with the knN, u can clean and it will be like a new filter everytime
if you are cheap them use pantyhose. I **** you not. Stretch panty hose across the intake hose. and zip tie it on. You can take your stock filter and start cutting away the paper portion. use the conection elbow and show the into the tube and try not to rip the panty hose.
