intresting problem
I am new to this site and I have a problem with my 1996 accord, and i think this is the place for help. When i am driving down the road, my car cuts off. not the lights or anything on the dash but the RPM's drop to zero and the speedometer drops to zero, ever though i am still going 60 and my engine is still turning (not running, but turning). when i turn the key off and then back to the on position, my check engine light is going on and off really fast, making a really, really, really fast ticking noise. i can get it started, but i have to turn the key on and off a few times until i get the check engine light to stay solid. then it starts and runs for a while and then just cuts back out. Sometimes it cuts off then comes right back on to running conditions. It will usually do this hickup a couple of times before it cuts out for a while. I recently replaced the timing belt, balancer belt and drive belts. I also removed the intake and plenum to clean out the passage for my ERG system. I have driven this car for about 150 miles before these probles occured. I do not think they are related because of the problems with the tach and speedometer, i believe it has something to do with the Inignition control system or the distributor. please advise, i would be extreemly gracious
It sounds to me like you could have a bad ignition switch. They just wear out sometimes.
And also check the ground wires that run to your intake manifold there is on under the thermostat housing that is real easy to forget.
after all of those check out fine it could be the main relay as well.

I have to concur with Dmc1. I would suspect the electrical portion of your Ignition Switch and if that checked out ok, the Main Relay.
There was a Recall from Honda on later Accords for the switch, but it doesn't involve '96's.
