tried puttin in my shifter...bolts stuck ideas plz
i dont want to pay a garage to put in my shfiter, i can do it myself but i need a bit of help. i'm replacing my stock shifter with a skunk2 short shifter. i was under the car yesterday , everything was fine till i went to take out the bolt, theres no way in hell its coming out. im guessing the bushing seized and are holding it? it spins but doesnt come loose. i tried taping it with a hammer but there no room to get a good swing, and WD40 doesnt do **** for loosening it up. anyone got an idea on how to get it out? i would like to save the bolt if i can, if not it doesnt matter. thanks guys
WD40 is not very good for losening bolts, go to your local autoparts store and get liquid wrench, it's a small yellow can. You could use a breaking bar for leverage, it's a 1.5ft-2ft long bar with a fitting for sockets. A pair of visgrips, and your good to go. Hope that helps
are you talking about the 2 bolts that go up into the floor from underneath? if so, the nuts may have come unwelded. if you take off your center console, you should see the nuts that those bolts thread into. if they have broken the welds, just have somebody else hold the nut from the top while you try to loosen the bolt from underneath.

Nah penetrant won't do **** if the whole thing just spins!
Are you talking about one of the 2 bolts that holds the shift linkage to the underbody? The ones with the square, spot-welded heads? If so those welds are notorious for breaking and that allows the entire nut/bolt to just spin when you go to remove it.
You have to take the console & shifter boot off to access the heads of those bolts. Then clamp some vise grips onto them or have a friend hold them in place while you turn loosen the nut.
If those aren't the bolts, then please disregard my whole post

if you're talking about the one bolt on the bottom of the shifter i know what kind of pain in the *** you're talking about, i just about gave up on that one, i ended up cutting the head off and beating the living hell out of it with a punch until it poped out, probably spent an hour working on that damn bolt.

I bet your problem is as stated above, this happened to me, I had to have a friend hold the broken weld bolt from the top with a plier, then you go under the car and loosen the nut!!

yeah man if it is the one in the shifter and it spins but isn't backing out or feeling any looser than its probrably rusted to the bushing sleeve, there is'nt really a whole lot you can do about it other than cut the head and nut off and punch it out, you'll probrably need a bushing too when your done. and yeah man forget about wd40 and liquid wrench for that matter, PB blaster is by far the sh*t, i introduced a guy at work to the stuff and thats all we use at the shop now. good luck
i took out my center console and everything is fine there... the bolt im talking about the the one bolt that connects my shfiter to the shift link. the nut came off after some hard work...its been there for 16 years. that end is fine. i spun the bolt in both directions and it just spins, wont budge. i tired tapping it lose but theres no way i can get a good swing and the other end can be gripped worth ****. i love how the little thing like this are so simple, yet such a bitch...and i agree with you it is nice to see ppl stuck how you once were lol
try to drop your linkage down by taking out the two bolts that i was talking about before. you may hit your exhaust, or you may be able to get it by. after you have the end of the linkage lowered, then you will have plenty of room to work. i am assuming that you have the car up on jackstands, right?
