I think you go by the head, right? If you have a vtec head, you need the vtec head gasket.

I thoght it didnt matter, all d head gaskets are they same layout just different material.

the a6 is that graphite ****, z6 is metal and I think y8 is 3layer metal. If I remeber right

you can take a layer out of the y8 to boost compression but it's up to you.

I am pretty sure they are not all the same... I am also equally as sure they are ALL MLS.

you're wrong, pretty sure about them all being the same, and they are definitely not all MLS. I have used the composite/graphite HG's on a lot of my motors.

And you used all OEM supplied gaskets? Or aftermarket crap?

Edit: Also somewhat interesting that Honda would have different part numbers for the supposedly "same" gasket...

Edit again: Even more strange that even FEL PRO shows a different part number.. so now what?

And the Z6 one I used on my engine was MLS... and the A6 I worked on had a MLS head gasket also, and the VX engine sitting in my garage is also MLS... do we see a pattern here?

I've pulled stock head gaskets on a d16a6 88 crx si and d15b2 91 crx dx. They both had the non-metal type that tears.

Actually, you're wrong. The d-series dohc ZC has a different headgasket then the sohc blocks, and they arnt interchangable.

yeah, the dohc zc is different, but all sohc head gaskets are interchangeable.

they stock HG , honda one, for a d16a6 (well, any sohc, 88-91) was a graphite/composite, with fire rings.

they suck to take off the block.

Correction there skip...

You might have been right about the composition of head gasket material.
You were NOT right in saying they are all the same between all D series.

Actually, choosing the right gasket depends on what you want your compression to be. The a6 gasket is thicker than the y8 gasket and it will drop your compression by roughly a third of a point. But I would still stick with the y8 gasket since it's a quality 3 layer MLS.

And for those of you wondering, the z6 and y8 gaskets are the same, but they have different part numbers because they have different prices. In other words, Honda charges you more for the y8 gasket for no reason.

I want to disagree with you on that last point. My Z6 gasket was around 60 from majestichonda whereas the Y8 gasket was around 23.

Yeah I don't know, it depends. I know in Canada the y8 is twice as much as the z6.

I just know they're the same gasket with different prices.
