Try the link to understand Vtec better. In the original civics with vtec it was really apparent when the Vtec turned on, but honda has tamed the cam profile. A small light hooked into the Vtec solenoid will tell you when it turns on.

accords vtec is set at i believe 3800 rpm....me and my cousins experimented all the vtec ecu a while ago....we plugged up the vtec ecu's to my b16 civic coupe and the accord one we heard vtec crossover at 3800 rpm, the civic p28 ecu kicked in at 4800 and original si ecu you could hear the first vtec voice at 4800, then the actual vtec at 5200 all the way to redline....

and putting on an exhaust wont make it any more noticeable because on single cam vtec's i believe the vtec lobes are only on the intake side of the cam, therefore it wont make it any different.

one thing you might wanna try is switch in a h22 or any bseries vtec soliniod and you might be able to hear it, (my cousins single cam vtec has a b16 vtec soloniod on it and you could hear the vtec a little more clearly, not quite as loud as a dohc vtec but louder than singlecams).

There is no 'set' RPM for the vtec solenoid to turn on, the link I placed in the above post is parts of the Honda Service Training about Vtec.... The ECM compares the values of the RPM,MPH, And MAP to make the determination if the Secondary cam profile is needed.

I think I'll only post this info 500 more times!!!
