Crankshaft question.....
OK, so I'm very upset to say the least...anywho....
My dumbass self allowed my fiancee's dad to work on my car while I was on vacation. It was just a basic Timing belt replacement. Well, apparntly he didn't install the crankshaft pulley correctly because it vibrated loose, and the pulley is trashed, and we had to get a tap & dye set to rethread the shaft. So, I just ordered a new pulley ($120), but what is the chance that the crankshaft got F'd up due to the vibration? I really don't want to have to spend $600+ on a new crankshaft.
I will NEVER let him touch my car again after this crap, and he has been a mechanic for 30 freaking years. This sucks!

its highly unlikely that it damaged the crankshaft. i mean its pretty damn strong. by the crankshaft pulley you mean the pulley on the harmonic balancer rite? so you mean the harmonic balancer fell off. well yea its not like the vibration is gonna say bend the crankshaft or anything but it could scratch it up where the harmonic balancer seats. but yea just clean it up with some emery cloth.
Yeah, the harmonic balancer is toast and so were the threads on the shaft, but that's been corrected w/ a tap & dye set. I didn't figure that the Crank would get out of round at all, but I figured that I'd get the question out there just to see.

It's not a harmonic balancer.
Your engine should be fine as long as you didn't have it running for very long with the f'ed up pulley.

You should be OK.
The crank pulley bolt needs to be torqued to 181 ftlbs. You need some sort of pulley holder to stop it from rotating while you tighten the bolt. There is no way around it.
DO NOT INSTALL/TIGHTEN THE BOLT WITH AN IMPACT GUN.

I didn't feel like pulling out the Honda diagrams to show him that, so thanks
.
Yeah, i didn't figure it would be too bad. I did limp it home like 4 blocks from where I noticed it, so my hope is that it's OK.
So far it cost $85 for the tap & dye set, $120 for the pulley, and $65 for the tow....

thank you....i was furiously wanting to say this as i began to read.....
your motor will be ok, but thats just a lesson, do your own work....i always do....

Impact it to 2,000,000lbft of torque. Then it will never come off. Just kidding I wanted to reiterate that you may not be able to torque the bolt to 181 now since the threads might pull out. I say this because I don't know how bad the threads were beatup. If you had to do a lot of cutting then the threads may pull out as soon as you start to torque it. If it starts to feel funny and your close to the torque spec just stop and leave it as tight as you can get it. If the pulley falls off again then you will probably say expletive skidtron but then you will try to torque it pull the threads and have to buy a crankshaft anywyas then I will say HA see what happens if you would have torqued it to 181 anywyas . Just trying to save your *** here!
I had the timing belt replaced by the dealer and 6 months later, the pulley came off. At first they were only going to replace the pulley, but then, they discovered that the crank shaft was damaged and needed to be replace. They completed the job for free, but took them 2 weeks. I hope you have better luck.
It's not a very bad idea to impact it, assuming you just tap it on there and don't sit there hammering it for 10 minutes....
The crank should be fine. I've seen MUCH worse in regards to pulleys doing funky things, and everything was fine.

I had one break in two on me going down the road(crank pulley that is).. My crank appears to be fine and its still running as good as new...
Explanation includes part of the crank pulley hitting the hood and the other part coming off with a little bit of wiggling and a kick or two... I had to drive it home w/o a pulley on there and the bolt in the passenger seat.

How did the crankshift get f'd up? Was it the threading on the shaft that the pulley bolts to, or something else?

Oh the woodruff key & key area on the pulley were trashed, as were the splines in the pulley. It's up and running, and should be good to go now. The crank seems to be coo.
