Default Fan is staying on all the time HELP!

I just got another new motor and we had just finished putting it in...it threw a check engine code. and it was 6 the water temp sensor in the head well we replaced it fixed the light. BUT when we turned the car off the fan came on, turned the car on and the fan went off. Also when you unplug the water temp sensor the fan stops, this is with the key out. then we started it again and it threw the same code as if that sensor was bad again......? so what could it be i mean completely take the key out and the fan keeps running. Oh and one more thing when we unplugged the battery to clear the code, then hooked it back up the fan doesn't kick on until the car is turned over then shut off again.... it's really weird

Does it do this even when the engine is cold? Does it eventualy stop or will it run forever if you let it. Mine runs after ignition off for up to 6 or 7 minutes in the summer and a little less in the winter until the temp sensor cools to a certain point. The fan switch in the thermostat housing controls fan operation with key on. The one in the upper hose outlet controls fan on key off. If yours never cuts off, this switch could be stuck closed.

Unplug the fan switch on the upper hose outlet and probe the switch for continuity. If you have continuity, replace the switch. If no continuity, you could have a stuck relay. If you have power windows, it is the same relay and you can swap them to see.

it ended up being one of the engine harnesses were plugged wrong.. there were 2 identical plugs.. got crossed

I did the same thing, same symptoms as what you described - fan would stay on after switched to OFF. I had the fan switch and the temp sensor plugged in the opposite plugs. One is on the flange for the top radiator hose that comes out of the head. Can't exactly remember where the other one is, but it's on that side of the motor (obviously) and has the same plug (again, obviously).

The stock fans will kick on when the car is off. Sometimes when they are on when the car is off and you turn the car on the fans will shut off. That is normal.
