Default Thermostat question

OK say if my thermostat was stuck closed, would this stop the fan sensor from turning the fan on?

No, because a closed thermostat would allow the coolant inside the engine to get really hot and not circulate to the rest of the system, but the temp sensor and fan sensor read off the coolant's temperature from the cylinder head area. Those sensors would still read the temp correctly. If the fan switched on however, it would do nothing because the hot coolant would be stuck inside the engine.

A bad temp sensor, fan switch, fan relay, the fan itself, the wiring, fuses, and the computer. If any one (or more) of those things has gone bad, your fan will not work properly. Your best bet is to start with the fuses.

Ok thanks. I think my thermostat is gets stuck open sometimes. Because the car will only overheat when its sitting still. Never overheats while driving.

Would any of those prevent the blower inside the car from working. My rad fan and blower went out at the same time. I checked all fuses and relays and all are ok.

Sounds to me like your only problem is the rad fan. I doubt your thermostat is givving you trouble. Start checking the things I listed in my last post.

I would think the two are completly unrelated. For your rad fan, check the things I told tianporn to check, and make sure you check all the big fuses too. I'm not sure If Honda still did it in 98, but in my integra the fuse for the blower fan was one of those big ones, and it was inside the car above the fuse panal.

Just another question.

Say if my thermostat was stuck closed, would this cause the ECU to run the car in open loop mode? Or is that dependent on something else? This is because my car runs really **** when it sits in traffic for a little while and the temperature starts rising. Feels like its running really rich or timing severely retarded.

Pull every 7.5 amp fuse out of your fuse panel under the dash and physically check them. What you described happened to my car before (00EM1) and all I remember was that the fuse wasn't one that was clearly labeled to indicate that it controlled the cooling fan and blower motor, so it's easy to over look it.

Forget your thermostat, I highly doubt that it has anything to do with your problems period. First of all find out why your cooling fan isn't functioning, then have a leakdown test done on your car to see if the head gasket is ok. Have your timing checked and examine your spark plugs to see how the engine is doing. Hopefully the problems you're experiencing now aren't a result of frequent overheating cycles.

not meaning to hijack the thread, but is it ok to use 2 different engage temp rating thermostat and fan switch?

say im currently using a SARD thermostat opening at 68C and a mugen fan switch which open i believe at 7x or 8x?

yep that's fine, it just means that your car will heat up a little more, to the fan turn on point, when idling or in traffic but will cool down to the thermostat rating when moving.

That depends on the intake air temperature sensor. If the engine gets too hot, the intake air gets its heat too, which can make it run shitty. It can turn rich because you dont get enough O2 from superhot air. Do you got air in the cooling system?

tianporn, if your thermostat is stuck closed, you would get no fan.

this is because the lower hose will remain cold even if the whole dang radiator is hot due to no circulation, if theres no circulation and that hose is cold the fan sensor on the thermostat will never read the car as hot.

lol some ppl dont know what they're talking about up there... just listen to me, if u have a problem, take out the thermostat and put it in a boiling pot of water and see it slowely open (if its closed) then check the temperature. If its open right when u remove it from the housing then obviously its broken LOL

Thats exactly what i suspected. I think the thermostat is only stuck closed sometimes. Anyway i bought a new thermostat and will be installing it shortly. Will let people know the results.

What you're forgetting is that he said his car would only over heat when it was sitting and not when it was moving. If the thermostat was stuck closed, the car would overheat ALL the time no matter if it was being driven or not. It's NOT the thermostat....
