car failed emission test.. please help!!! :(
i have a 1990 accord that actually managed to double the NO ppm limit of 727 and the reading was 1489 NO ppm. this car has had another emission test done in mid 2001 and it passed with great results and that time my NO ppm count was 451.
in between 01 and 06 there was a period of over 3 years where the car was kept in the garage with no storage techniques used. refer to this thread https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1491456 i replaced the fuel pump and the puppy fired up no problem but now the car failed emissions.
the guy who did the test claimed it could be my oxygen sensor, catalyic converter, or EGR.
what would you guys say is the most likely cause of the problem? i've also noticed in the short amount i've driven it lately it seems to be guzzling more gas.
hopefully some of you knowledgeable guys out there can give me some advice because i hate playing guessing games especially when it cost time and $$$.
thanks all in advance.

this is a helpful thread.
but i think cleaning your egr ports and maybe running some seafoam through the engine will help with NOx

Clean your EGR ports first. then if your gas mileage doesn't improve, replace the O2 sensor. Your car should pass without the O2 sensor since your hydro's and CO were no problem. Stay away from seafoam and seafoam preachers.
There are plenty of recent threads on EGR port cleaning.

to clean my egr ports i'm gonna need to drill and slide hammer the whole 9 yards right? do you think i'd just be better off paying a mechanic to do it? how long should it take the mechanic is it a small job?

It all depends on your mechanical ability and time. I'm a good mechanic and I think it's a pain, but it's well worth the results, especially with these gas prices. I don't have a clue what a shop would charge.
do you think i could get away without cleaning the egr if i dumped in a bottle of that "guaranteed to pass emissions in a bottle" from the autostore? i do understand my NO count was double but maybe that stuff can work miracles.

No. NOX is formed in the combustion chamber in the presence of overly hot temperatures. The EGR reduces NOX by lowering the combustion temps and preventing from forming in the first place. Nothing in a bottle is going to lower those temps.

this will NOT work. It will do little to nothing, same as seafoam. just clean the EGR, and give your car a tune-up and you should pass.
