Default calling all tranny specialists!!

please, anyone who is very intelligent with honda transmissions.
i am absolutely dying to solve this problem.

Problem: I have just recently taken out my transmission to swap in an ls transmission into my 95 acura integra.. i finished swapping in the transmission for the first time on thursday, and i took the car out for a test drive

it went into all gears 1,2,3,4,5 and R fine. this was while i was parked basically.
i then proceeded to test drive the car.. rode first gear and it was fine.. no whine.
i pulled out and changed to second gear.. as soon as the clutch engaged i could hear the transmission starting to whine.. getting louder as the rpm rose.
i took it back to my dads shop, where i am doing all the work and told him there is a whine while in gears 2-5. (the whine sounds like when driving in reverse)
he took the car for a test drive the day after and came to a conclusion that it could be the differential in the tranny.

so, i took the differential and differential gear out today and swapped with what should be the original differential gear for that transmission.
i complete doing all this and take the car back out for another test drive today.
it seems as though gears 1-3 there is no whine in the trans or a very slight whine, but gears 4-5 the noise is magnified. i CANNOT figure out what is wrong and im sick of taking this ****** trans out 3 times this week.

What Ive Done:
Changed the trans
changed the diff and diff gear to what i believe to be the normal/original parts for this trans. (im wondering if all diff gears for ls hydros are the same?)
i have 10w30 motor oil in the tranny (about 2 1/2 quarts)
all gears and synchros are fine by sight.

the noise is only present when in gear cruising, on and off throttle.
the noise is not present while at a dead stop in neutral.
the noise is only present when the clutch is engaged (not depressed)

it seems as though the differential would be the only problem to make the whine aka diff whine... but changing this out has not solved my problem 100%.. what the hell else could it be im SO lost.

pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee help! and if you need clearer details please ask and ill be happy to explain bettter. im just coming off the top of my head here.

thank you.

why the expletive are you using motor oil in a transmission!!!!!!!! motor oil is for motors, you need honda manual transmission fluid, (mtf).

i use regular 10w-30 in the tranny.

the only thing i can think of is that some of the clearances are off. maybe a 3rd gear is rubbing up against a 4th gear. maybe the differential isn't shimmed correctly?

I use 30w motor oil and haven't had a problem. For the original poster, it can't be the differential itself because it would make the noise in all gears. It could could certainly be an improperly shimmed bearing. If it sounds more like gear noise, it could be a worn out bearing causing improper meshing of certain gears.

this is obviously a difficult thing to solve over the computer..
im trying to be as accurate as possible.

my dad is a mechanic and does transmissions as well.. and he even asked a transmission specialist and this guy said the diff doesnt have any shims... im wondering if i put some in there though it may help clearances?

are all hydro ls diff gears the same?? as well as speedo and spider gears etc.

please help! i hate this noise its horrible.

and i am told 10-30 is fine as well.. oil is oil.. trannies just cant have to little of friction for proper operation of synchros as far as i know..

keep posting with ideas and ask me for more details specifically if need be.

thanks again guys

I forgot that not all of the trannies have shims for the differential bearings. The newer ones do because they are ball bearings. Older ones were tapered roller bearings which require the proper preload to function properly. I'm not sure which of these you have.

i believe i have a ball bearing differential.. could you post pics of each for myself to let you know for sure. its a hydro 95+ ls tranny.
as far as i know all the diff had in between that and the caseing was a c-clip on one side..

im hoping you hit the nail on the head with your previous post about what you think it was. i still have to mention this to my dad. should be able to let you all know soon. thanks

Was it a c-clip as in retaining ring? I think the c-clip is actually a shim. I am not too sure. I think the shims in an LS tranny are different from GSR.

yeah the c clip was in between the outside of the diff bearing and im guessing the oil ring gasket?? basically between diff and trans caseing.

the noise seems to be progressively getting quieter? but every now and then it hums and whines again... is there anyway that the diff gear and pinion start meshing better together again??
