SOHC VTEC head swap, need parts and help!!! please.
i am putting a d16z6 head (1994 civic si, got the # off head) on my 94 del sol. All i have is the head i need a valve cover, hint hint anybody have one???.
ok so what 'I' think is.......... is you put the head on with a vtec head gasket, vtec timing belt, and get a vtec controller and use stock ECU? am i wrong?
Please tell me what i need to do this the cheapest. ex:gaskets, belt, ecu?, controller.
thanx.

yeah hondata, thats the one, lol, he said he could make my ecu vtec compatable, and he can make my ecu anyway i want it, is that better than a p28?
depends, if he can burn ecu's, or if he has a unti(s100,s200,2300) that he is selling, youd be better off buying a chipped and socketed ecu, p28, can run hondata, crome, uberdata, neptune, whatever for about 150 off of the sponsor foroums
You'll need a P28 and you'll need to run/connect the wires to your VTEC solenoid.
No use in getting a chipped ECU unless you plan on doing any real tuning.

heres my advice, do it right, and do it right the first time. dont fu ck around or cut corners, if you dont have money for all the **** you need, set your project aside for awhile until you have all of what you need. i did the mini me and it wasn't worth it at all, i would of been much happier spending an extra $300-400 and going turbo.
if your not gonna go turbo, then you may or maynot want to raise your compression. if you do, get a Y8 gasket, if you want to retain stock compression just use a Z6 gasket.
DONT FORGET TO PULL THE OIL JET BETWEEN PISTONS 2 & 3.
Use a D16Z6 timing belt. i was told that the mini me throws off the timing by a half tooth, not much but an adjustable cam gear is optional. skunk2 or megan are my personal preference.
Your gonna need a top end gasket kit most likely too, you would be suprised how many gaskets you will need. the whole kit costs like $90 i think. i just went to honda everytime i noticed that something needed a gasket and got it from them. that costed me like $50
Pics of my mini-me are in my sig if you want to see some before and after pics.
Good luck

so i do have to use a head gasket for a vtec head, what is the diff between vtec and non? still need a cover and ECU.
thanx for all the info.

yea, you need to go buy a vtec gasket. you have two choices, a d16z6 gasket or a d16y8 gasket. the y8 gasket in thinner thus bumping your compression. if you bump compression, you will make like 3-5% more power but you will need to running higher octane gas and it puts added stress on the motor... not alot though...
also the y8 gasket is metal which means its reusable

Good advice except for that last part. I thought all OEM headgaskets were metal. The Y8 is just 2 ply as opposed to the 3 ply Z6 gasket (and about 1/2 the cost.)
Honda gaskets are "Crush type" gaskets or something like that, which means the head gasket has to be replaced everytime the headbolts/studs come off.
Look for ricey mcricerton or bauleycivic's minime write up.
