When I gutted my cat it made the exhaust note higher pitched and raspier. Basically it sounded like ****. I replaced the cat with a high flow model a couple of weeks later.

Hey 91 civic! I could use your input!

What kind of exhaust are you running? I just had a thermal r&d installed, and I dropped the cat. Now at the cam changeover it sounds like weed-whacking $hi+. (I have the same motor you do)

Could you explain in some more detail the sound differences w/ & w/out cat you experienced? Any power loss? What kind of high flow cat are you running? Do you like it?

Sorry for all the Q's, but I could really use your first-hand experience. You've got the same year car and same model engine (mine's a hatch) so that's pretty similar.

Thanks for your help!

I am running the thermal exhaust on my 4dr. I used to have a ZC with a gutted cat and it sounded like *** and I lost some power. I could also tell the difference in the powerband when I took it to the track I then decided to replace it with a high flow cat. My ZC took a a dump so I replaced it with a b16. I decided one day to throw on my gutted cat and see what it sounded like. It was pretty deep but quiet under 5000 rpm. But once it hit the crossover it got real buzzy and again sounded like *** and it seemed to lose power down low. I would personally replace the cat and see how it sounds and feels. The gains by removing the cat are not worth the sound that it creates. If youhad a FI setup then I would remove the cat. JMO

Ive now had a lot of ppl tell me that with the cat taken off the exhaust note gets way higher and tinish. So if you want a low growl and not a souped up weed wacker then keep the cat and drop the resonator. Thats what ive been told throught this and other posts. Remember the larger diameter the pipe the lower the sound cauz the exhaust slows down. Hope that helps ive seen and read all of your posts with your exhaust problem and i dont got a VTEC engine so i can not help you. I hope you get it fixed soon

Cool. Thanks.

I'll have to try putting in a high-flow cat. Did that seem to take out the gross sound on the high end? This is what I just can't stand. Just couldn't quite gather from your reply how your b16 sounds with the cat in place. Mine used to have a SICK growl @ the cam changeover...does the cat help with this?

Thanks again

As i understand a honda with out the cat will sound like a weed wacker nomadder what exhaust is on. You dont really need to get a high flow cause you might be risking that soud again. I just went to a junkyard and got a cat off a newer veicle. Solved all the problems
