Is it necessary to change the PCV?
Hi guys! First of all, what is a PCV and do we need to change it at certain miles or time? I remember someone saying that it should be replace and it is a piece that goes from teh engine to the intake manifold. some help me out please!
thanks
thanks
it is only about $5 for a new one, little plastic L bend looking thing, On an LS it is right in the middle of the valve cover, at the back.
Personally i just changed mine one day when i was doing a full tune-up

check to see if you need a new one.
i remember hearing it should be changed either every oil change, or every other oil change.

If you can pull it from the engine real quick, shake it to see if it rattles. If it does it's good.
If you want to replace it for peace of mind, they're cheap as well.

what does the pcv valve do?
PCV- positive crankcase ventilation
it allows the crank case pressure created by the reciprocating assembly to be evacuated by way of manifold vacuum
can it be removed ?
no it will cause premature ring failure and other issues.
what would you need to remove this bitch off the engine? and would I want to remove ?
to answer the second half of the question, NO
there is a very good reason it is there and without it, your engine is in for a world of hurt. some racers do remove then BUT they instead use a reed valve and use the outgoing exhaust to create a venturi effect to remove the crankcase gasses.

on the b18c1 the pcv is a bitch to take out. it is on the firewall side of the motor under the intake manifold; not alot of room to work with. but the ls is nice and easy..
on my motor, it was in there very snug i pulled on the hose, and voila, it snapped the pcv right off and made it even harder to get to since the plastic was stuck in the hole.
i used a screw driver to get the broken piece out.

You can get it a lot cheaper from napa, carquest, etc and those work just as well as the OEM ones.

so the PCV is just a one piece? it is a black hose right about 10 inches long and is it really easy to replace on an 99 LS?
thanks

no its the little L shaped piece of plastic at the end of that 10 inch long hose. and yes you do need to change it because your motor needs to breathe better. you can check your current one by running the motor and takin out the pcv valve and putting your finger over the part that plugs in the motor. i believe if it clicks your ok... someone correct me if im wrong GL to the op
