Changing gauge cluster... quick question and no Flamers allowed
Real quick... if you change the gauge cluster (JDM or whatever bling is out there) will that alter your vehicle in a way that someone will know it was altered if you were to return it back to the original? My thought was if you changed out the cluster and drove with it like that then changed back you could cheat the next person of mileage. I have no intentions of this unlawful activity... it just crossed my mind while looking at clusters on egay.
Thanks

carfax can sometimes bust somebody for this type of activity.
Like if your car went in for emissions testing and there's a record of the car having done 50,000miles....but then you went on to sell your car with "fake mileage" for 35,000miles and somebody looks up your car on carfax....
You'll probably end up losing your sale....

i think he means by changing the cluster, there isnt no report of the mileage driven on the orginal cluster itself
yes exactly....
if you changed out the cluster and didn't do any "official work" (emissions/inspections or service at a dealership - wutever) then there'd be no way to tell that the mileage wasn't actual.

Exactly... but I guess you could "roll" back the miles as well with a new(er) cluster.
(and to get around the carfax thing... some people never take their cars to the dealer or registered repair places. So then they would never have their cars marked for mileage)
Oh well... it was just on my mind. I'm running carfax on my car tonight.

Every car has to go in for emissions testing, and also renew registration. In addition to that insurance also likes to know the mileage, as well as the DMV during title transfers and sales. So its not that easy to get around, as you can only roll it back to the last time it was recorded, but itd still seem pretty fishy if it was last reported to have xxx miles in 05' with an average of for comparisons sake 10K mi/yr and it has less than 2K mi in the past two years or whatever; and the whole damn idea is totally lame.

Um, not so quick. In 16 years of driving, I've never had a car inspected, emissions tested, or been required to show odometer reading to renew a tag.
It varies from state to state, even varies within a state.
Transfering a title requires the mileage, though.
Anyway, at the very least, the right thing to do would be to match the odometer from the original cluster to the new one; convert to kms if need be.

i think there are easier ways of rolling back the miles unless you happen to have a spare cluster in hand, never buy a car you hav'nt seen up close in the light of day & base your purchase on the overall condition of the car not the speedo

I was responding to the previous post and apparently between me clicking submit the other guy entered his opinions. So yes I read it after I posted. -I said no flamers. Notice the times on the post????
It's not a lame idea! It's a concern/thought I had and I wanted a answer. SO go off some where else... right.
