Distributor Cap and Rotor Install Question
Hey guys,
Was just wondering if someone can help me out.
I am replacing my spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor.
The wires are off and so is the distributor cap. I am having a hard time trying to get the rotor out. I am trying not to strip the screw that is way in there.
Any ideas?
Also, where can I get a replacement screw just in case?
And with the spark plugs, how tight do I tighten it?
And with the rubber gasket, I did not know that it does not come with the cap, is it possible for me to use the old one for now until I order a new one?
Thanks.

Yea, the screw started to strip, so I stopped.
I heard that you can crank the engine a bit so that the screw will move. This way I can get a better angle. Will it be okay if I crank it with the cap and wires off?

it would be easier if you just crank it by hand with a ratchet on the crank pulley bolt.
use vise grips if it is starting to strip. and a new screw usually comes with the rotor.

are you asking how you tighten the spark plugs? with a spark plug socket or deep well 5/8" and an extention. screw them in finger tight, then give it another 1/4 turn.
as for the gasket, as long as it looks alright and not dried or cracked, go ahead.

Just hope that screw doesn't strip. Last year I went to change my cap and rotor, but the screw had been stripped by the previous owner. Well I had to bring the car in to get my wheel bearings fixed so we asked my mechanic if he could take a look at it for us. He said my rotor was in good condition and didn't need to be changed, but that was after he told me he couldn't get the screw out and the whole distrubuter would need to be taken apart most likely to change that stuff or even replaced.

yah its fine to give it a .1 second crank to move the rotor.
the rotor on mine was stuck so hard i had to break away the entire rotor and use vise grips on the metal frame that remained.

To continue this discussion... is there are trick to removing the rotor? I have the screw completely loose but the rotor will not seem to slide off. I don't want to tear it apart or damage any other component.
